Caring for Luxury Leather

A well kept bag holds its shape, colour and value for decades. Most damage to luxury leather comes from storage, light and moisture rather than from wear. This page explains how to look after bags and small leather goods.

Storage

• Stuff bags lightly with acid free tissue to hold their shape, and keep them in their dust bags.
• Store bags upright on a shelf. Hanging by the handles stretches them over time.
• Avoid plastic covers, which trap moisture and can cause mould and sticky linings.
• Keep straps detached and stored alongside, and wrap hardware in tissue so it cannot mark the leather.

Light and humidity

• Keep leather away from direct sun, which fades colour and dries the surface.
• Mould grows in warm, humid conditions. Air bags regularly and use moisture absorbers in closed cupboards.
• Rotate bags in use so that each has time to rest and breathe.

Cleaning

• Wipe smooth leathers and coated canvas with a soft, dry cloth. A slightly damp cloth can be used on coated canvas.
• Test any leather cleaner or conditioner on a hidden area first. Many luxury leathers have finishes that react badly to products.
• Natural vachetta trim marks easily with water. Keep it dry, and expect it to darken gradually to a honey patina.
• Exotic skins should be cleaned only by a specialist.

Everyday wear

• Dark denim and newsprint can transfer colour to pale leathers.
• Keep pens, cosmetics and sharp objects in pouches inside the bag.
• Protective film on new hardware can be kept until the bag is first used.

Repairs

Worn corners, cracked edge paint, loose stitching and sticky linings can usually be repaired. Choose the brand's own service or an experienced leather restorer, and keep a record of any work for future owners.
