Alpha Industries: The MA-1 and Its Long Flight

Alpha Industries was established in 1959 in Knoxville, Tennessee, and became closely identified with the MA-1, the nylon flight jacket made for the US military. Its orange lining, rib-knit collar and cuffs, and flat silhouette passed from airfields to civilian wardrobes, then to streetwear and to the amekaji tradition in Japan.

Japanese wearers have long treated the MA-1 as a foundation piece, and well-kept military-pattern examples are easy to find here. Nylon ages quietly, so look at lining condition, rib-knit elasticity, zip function and the care label rather than at the outer shell alone.

Military-spec labels, contract numbers and date tags help place a jacket in time, and we photograph them where they survive.
