A white canvas Original Sole low-top drenched in red, yellow, blue and black paint, sole and upper alike, in EU 42 and lightly worn.
The Piece
Mihara Yasuhiro trained at Tama Art University and began with footwear, which is why the shoe has always been the centre of his house. The Original Sole, modelled by hand in clay by the designer and then cast in rubber, keeps the slumped, melted contours of that first sculpture, so every pair looks as if a classic vulcanised sneaker had been left too close to the stove. Paint has long been part of that vocabulary: the house splatters, drips and smudges its shoes by hand so that no two pairs are identical.
This pair is believed to be built on the Peterson-type cap-toe canvas low-top. The white cotton canvas, the melted sidewall and even the outsole edge are covered in an action-painting splatter of red, mustard yellow, cobalt blue and black, and the MMY tongue label and red heel tab are still visible beneath it. White flat laces complete the look; the brown outsole carries the MMY tread logo.
It is the most expressive kind of Mihara shoe, and it works best as the single loud note in a quiet outfit: black wide trousers, raw denim or grey sweats. EU 42 corresponds to roughly JP 27 cm on this last.
