Jil Sander: Minimalism from Hamburg

Jil Sander founded her house in Hamburg in 1968, and the name has since stood for pared-back tailoring and fine cloth. Sander left the company more than once; Raf Simons was its creative director until early 2012, and her +J collaboration with the Japanese company Uniqlo ran from 2009 to 2011, with a return for one season in 2020. Control of the brand passed to OTB Group in 2021. The label is dated in the Encyclopedia.

The collection will fill as the archive grows. Season, size and condition are recorded in each description, and the season on the inside tag is often the best guide to dating a piece.

Curator’s note: Jil Sander is a German house of pared-back tailoring, filed here beside the Japanese minimalists. Continue with the Fashionista Bible, the directory of Japanese fashion designers and the collector guides.
