A long black field parka from Raf Simons’s autumn-winter 2007 menswear for Jil Sander, in a smooth technical shell with a storm collar, snap-flap pockets and a drawcord waist.
The Piece
Raf Simons took over Jil Sander in 2005 and spent seven years refining the house’s purity into something sharper and more architectural. His menswear for the label is admired for its quiet engineering: familiar garments, rebuilt with exact proportions and almost no ornament. The first image shows the look on the runway for reference.
This parka, offered in Japan as a bomber, is in fact a long field coat reaching 99 cm. It has a stand collar with a buttoned throat tab beneath a wide yoke with snapped flaps, a concealed front placket, two chest and two lower snap-flap pockets, and an internal drawcord that gathers the waist. The shell is 100% polyester with a soft, low sheen, and the coat is made in Italy.
Size 50 with a regular fit, it sits easily over a suit jacket or a heavy knit, and the drawcord lets it move from a straight, minimal column to a defined waist.
Raf Simons’s Jil Sander menswear has been rediscovered by a new generation looking for clean, well-made clothes with real design intelligence. Outerwear such as this, technical in fabric and almost invisible in detail, is the essence of that period and wears as easily today as it did on the Milan runway.
