Vintage Velvet Sukajan, Momotarō & Kintarō Folk Legend Embroidery with White Tiger and Dragon, Free Size

Momotarō, the peach boy who sets out to defeat the ogres of Onigashima, and Kintarō, the golden boy raised in the mountains, are the two great heroes of Japanese children's folklore. This vintage velvet souvenir jacket gathers them with a white tiger, samurai warriors and a dragon in tattoo-art embroidery.

The Piece

A rare vintage sukajan in velvet (velveteen / velour), embroidered in a tattoo-art idiom with Momotarō and Kintarō, a white tiger (tora), samurai musha and a dragon (ryū). It is marked Free Size by the manufacturer.

Kintarō, shown wrestling bears and carrying an axe, became a symbol of a strong, healthy boyhood, and Momotarō's band of dog, monkey and pheasant remains one of the best-loved quests in Japanese storytelling; the white tiger, guardian of the west, adds a note of protective power.
