Rare Vintage Japanese Sukajan Jacket Shoki Devil Slayer Tiger Reversible Yokosuka Souvenir Bomber Jacket Free Size M-L

Shōki the Demon Queller grapples with a tiger across the green satin back, sword and banner flying, while his quarry, a band of horned oni, scatters across the front. The reverse turns to a teal brocade woven with brushed characters for longevity and good fortune.

The Piece

Shōki (鍾馗) came to Japan from Chinese legend as the bearded scholar-ghost who vowed to rid the world of demons. From the Edo period his fierce image was hung in homes and painted on banners for Boys' Day as a ward against illness and misfortune, and ukiyo-e masters drew him again and again. Here he is embroidered in full armour and flowing robes above a snarling tiger, with a red-maned beast at its feet.

The front continues the story: oni with clubs and swords tumble down either side of the zip in vivid orange, blue and green thread. Turned inside out, the jacket becomes something entirely different, a deep teal jacquard patterned with calligraphic 寿 (longevity), 福 (fortune) and 禄 (prosperity) and red seal marks, with black satin panels along the sleeves.
