A Classic Japanese Sukajan Composition in Deep Navy Velvet
A beautifully atmospheric HOUSTON / 飛有棲屯 Japanese souvenir jacket built around one of the defining visual languages of the sukajan tradition: the tiger and dragon.
Rendered against deep midnight-navy velveteen, the embroidery has exceptional contrast. A large prowling tiger dominates the back beneath the handwritten-style “Japan” script, while long dragons coil down both sleeves through silver clouds. Matching tiger heads face inward across the chest, creating an unusually complete composition in which virtually every visible angle contributes to the artwork.
The cream diamond-quilted interior gives the piece greater substance than a lightweight satin sukajan and makes it especially appealing as a cooler-season souvenir jacket.
This is the kind of jacket that captures exactly why Japanese sukajan became collectible beyond their original souvenir context: bold symbolism, graphic symmetry, texture, craftsmanship and unmistakable visual identity.

Embroidery & Iconography
Tiger • Tora • 虎
The central tiger is the visual monarch of the jacket.
Rather than a tiny crest, HOUSTON gives the animal nearly the entire back panel. The tiger is embroidered in layered gold, yellow, cream, black and white thread, with pronounced claws, whiskers, facial expression and stripe work.
In Japanese visual culture, the tiger is commonly associated with:
courage • power • determination • protection • martial spirit
Although the tiger is not native to Japan, it became an important subject in East Asian painting and later appeared throughout Japanese decorative art, tattoo imagery, military-inspired fashion and sukajan embroidery.
The surrounding green bamboo-like foliage further intensifies the composition, giving the animal a naturalistic setting rather than leaving it suspended against the velvet.
Above the tiger sits the embroidered word:
JAPAN
That simple inscription connects the jacket directly to the visual lineage of souvenir jackets created as wearable memories of Japan.
Dragon Sleeves • Ryū • 龍
Perhaps the jacket’s strongest feature is its extraordinary sleeve treatment.
Both sleeves carry vertically arranged Japanese dragons winding through stylized clouds, embroidered almost from shoulder to cuff.
The dragons are worked primarily in muted green-gold tones with pink, cream, silver and lavender accents.
Long curling bodies, claws, whiskers and cloud formations create a visual rhythm that wraps around the arms when the jacket is worn.
In Japanese iconography, the dragon represents qualities such as:
strength • transformation • wisdom • elemental power • guardianship
Using dragons on the sleeves while reserving the tiger for the torso creates the celebrated Ryū-Tora, Dragon and Tiger duality, one of East Asian art's most enduring pairings.
The tiger represents grounded physical force.
The dragon represents celestial or spiritual force.
Together they form a beautifully balanced composition of earth and sky, instinct and wisdom, visible and unseen strength.
Front Design
The front continues the theme rather than becoming visually blank.
Two embroidered tiger portraits flank the zipper at chest level, creating a mirrored presentation.
Each tiger head features pronounced teeth, whiskers and alternating gold, white and black threadwork.
The sleeves remain extraordinarily elaborate even from the front, with the dragons, clouds and floral/cloud motifs flowing continuously toward the cuffs.
This makes the jacket visually compelling whether viewed:
from the front,
from the side,
or from the back.
That full-surface approach is one of the details that separates a strong sukajan design from jackets relying only on a single rear graphic.
Deep Navy Velveteen
The dark navy body is especially effective here.
Velveteen absorbs light differently from satin, giving the jacket a deeper, almost ink-like field on which the metallic-looking embroidery appears to float.
Depending on lighting, the body can shift visually between:
midnight blue,
navy,
blue-black,
and deep indigo.
The pile surface also gives the garment substantially more visual depth than ordinary flat-weave bomber fabric.
Against that darkness, the tiger and dragons appear almost illuminated.
Quilted Ivory Interior
Inside is a contrasting ivory / champagne-toned diamond-quilted lining.
The pale interior dramatically changes the mood of the jacket when opened and also reveals its cooler-weather construction.
According to the garment label:
Outer / 表地: Cotton 100%
Lining / 裏地: Acetate 100%
Padding / 中綿: Polyester 100%
The quilted construction gives the jacket more body and insulation than an unlined lightweight rayon souvenir jacket.
HOUSTON / 飛有棲屯
The neck label carries the distinctive kanji-styled 飛有棲屯 HOUSTON branding against a rising-sun inspired red-and-cream graphic.
The label also references Japanese locations including:
Sendai • Okinawa • Misawa • Kobe • Sasebo • Yokosuka
These names strongly reinforce the military-surplus and souvenir-jacket vocabulary surrounding the brand's aesthetic.
The garment also carries the product designation:
CST-4516
Together, the distinctive label, model identification and period styling make this more interesting than an anonymous modern tiger souvenir jacket.
Sukajan Heritage
The sukajan emerged from postwar Japan, particularly around military-port communities such as Yokosuka.
Early jackets adapted American bomber and varsity silhouettes to Japanese decorative traditions. Dragons, tigers, eagles, maps, Mount Fuji, cherry blossoms and military insignia became embroidered souvenirs that servicemen could carry home.
Over time the garment escaped the souvenir shop entirely.
It migrated into:
Japanese rockabilly,
bosozoku and motorcycle culture,
amekaji,
punk and streetwear,
luxury fashion,
tattoo-influenced design,
and contemporary Japanese heritage clothing.
Today, a strong sukajan sits somewhere between garment, cultural artifact and portable illustration.
This HOUSTON example leans firmly into that older visual vocabulary.
Period & Aesthetic
The construction, elaborate kanji-style HOUSTON label, padded velveteen body and traditional tiger-and-dragon imagery give this piece a decidedly older Japanese revival / vintage-inspired sukajan character rather than the cleaner presentation of many contemporary jackets.
It channels the style of mid-century souvenir embroidery while remaining highly wearable as Japanese streetwear.
For collectors interested in Japanese Americana, amekaji or Yokosuka culture, the old-school HOUSTON presentation is particularly attractive.
Condition
This is a pre-owned garment and should be appreciated with the natural character expected from an older wearable piece.
The supplied photographs form an important part of the condition description and should be carefully reviewed for fabric texture, embroidery condition, lining, cuffs, collar, zipper and general wear.
Minor age-related wear, rubbing, pile variation, thread irregularities, storage marks or other signs of previous ownership may be present.
These characteristics are part of the individuality of vintage and vintage-style Japanese clothing rather than the uniform finish expected of a newly manufactured garment.
Size & Fit
Tagged Size: M / Medium
Japanese sizing can fit differently from contemporary Western sizing, particularly with older Japanese jackets.
The sukajan silhouette is traditionally relatively short in the body with substantial sleeve volume and a fitted waistband.
For international buyers, we strongly recommend judging fit through actual garment measurements rather than relying only on the letter size.
Exact measurements can be provided or added when available.
As a general reference, this should be considered a Japanese tagged Medium, but its practical Western fit will depend on body proportions and preferred styling.
It could work beautifully worn:
fitted over a T-shirt,
open over denim,
with wide trousers,
with Japanese selvedge jeans,
or layered into an amekaji wardrobe.
Why This Jacket Stands Out
What makes this piece compelling is not simply that it contains a tiger.
It is the completeness of the composition.
You receive:
a large back tiger,
two front tiger portraits,
full embroidered dragon sleeves,
Japanese cloud imagery,
bamboo foliage,
embroidered Japan lettering,
deep navy velveteen,
quilted ivory lining,
and the distinctive HOUSTON 飛有棲屯 label.
The decoration wraps around the entire garment rather than behaving like an isolated patch.
Seen from behind, it is unmistakably Japanese.
Seen from the side, the dragon embroidery takes over.
Seen from the front, twin tigers appear beneath the collar.
It is essentially a three-dimensional embroidered canvas.
Styling & Display
For collectors, this jacket displays beautifully on a broad wooden hanger where the entire sleeve embroidery can remain visible.
For wearable styling, the dark navy base is remarkably versatile.
Pair it with:
black denim,
indigo selvedge jeans,
white T-shirt and engineer boots,
wide military trousers,
Japanese workwear,
or monochrome streetwear.
The jacket supplies all the visual drama itself.
No additional ornament is necessary. 🐅🐉
Purchase, Shipping & Vintage Policy
Please review all photographs carefully before purchase, as they form an important part of the item's description and condition record.
Vintage and pre-owned garments are sold as-is and may display age-related characteristics, including minor wear, fading, surface variation, small marks, stitching irregularities or other traces of previous ownership.
Because vintage sizing differs greatly between brands, eras and countries, buyers should rely on actual measurements whenever available rather than the tagged size alone.
Preparation, shipping and handling normally takes 5–10 business days or earlier.
Worldwide shipping is normally arranged through EMS or another appropriate tracked international service, depending on destination and logistical requirements.
Tracking information will be provided once the shipment has been prepared and dispatched.
Reasonable and respectful offers may be considered.
