Parachute wings, a Japanese dragon and the inscriptions U.S. Paratroopers, Sendai Japan, 188 P.I.R and 11th Airborne fill the back of this HOUSTON sukajan. Worked in a restrained black and ivory palette, it translates airborne insignia into the ornamental vocabulary of the Japanese souvenir jacket.
The Piece
The back is built with a strong vertical hierarchy: U.S. Paratroopers across the shoulders, Sendai Japan beneath, then a Japanese-style dragon sweeping through flame- and cloud-like forms above a large parachute-and-wings emblem whose canopy is divided into two circular fields reading 188 and P.I.R, with 11th Airborne anchoring the base. Rather than reproducing a military patch, it evokes the occupation-era souvenir jackets on which unit names, places, insignia and local imagery were combined into personalized wearable souvenirs, and the dragon in the clouds quietly echoes paratroopers descending through the sky.
The front is quieter, with two compact circular dragon medallions placed symmetrically across the chest in an almost heraldic balance, so that from a distance the jacket reads as a refined black-and-ivory satin bomber. Further dragons run along the ivory satin sleeves in pale gold, cream and brown thread that blends softly into the fabric, becoming more visible as the satin catches stronger light.
The palette is deliberately controlled: deep black satin body, warm ivory and champagne sleeves, embroidery in cream, beige, tan, muted gold, rust, brown, charcoal and subtle red, and black rib knit striped in beige and red, the red used only sparingly. The result has a mature, almost archival military character for collectors who favor militaria, heritage Americana and aviation imagery over brighter tattoo-art designs.
HOUSTON is a long-running Japanese heritage and military-fashion label closely associated with reproduction flight jackets, field jackets and Americana-inspired clothing, part of Japan's decades-long, detail-conscious study of historical American garments. That background suits a jacket in which American and Japanese elements remain simultaneously visible: neither purely military clothing nor traditional dress, but the hybrid middle ground where the sukajan was born.
This is a later Japanese HOUSTON interpretation inspired by historical military sukajan, not an original postwar occupation-era jacket and not military-issued equipment. Later HOUSTON examples are collected for design, Japanese craftsmanship, brand interest and unusual embroidered themes, and this subject remains unusually faithful to the roots of souvenir-jacket culture.
