A coiled ryū dragon rises through clouds and currents beneath gold Japan script on the back of this vintage HOUSTON sukajan, with a roaring tiger and a descending eagle across the chest. Diamond quilting, metallic navy satin and luminous silver sleeves make it a padded, dimensional take on the classic Yokosuka jumper.
The Piece
The back is dominated by a long Japanese-style dragon worked in pale gold, bronze, ivory and dark blue. Its head fills the upper field, jaws open, horns sweeping back, long whiskers extending across the navy ground and mane articulated in pale directional stitching; the scaled body, in alternating pale gold and bronze fields with darker outlines, descends in several curves before circling through the lower composition. Ivory, white and dark blue curves, readable as clouds, wind, water or supernatural energy, surround it, and the word Japan in large gold-toned cursive crowns the scene.
One chest carries a roaring tiger head in pale yellow, ivory, brown, black and rust red, mouth open on white fangs and a dark red interior, with a striped forehead and extended whiskers. The other shows an eagle descending with wings fully extended, defined in white and gold-toned thread down to the talons and a sharply focused eye. Long golden dragons twist through cloud forms along the metallic silver sleeves from upper arm toward forearm, linking chest and back, their pale embroidery growing more visible as the satin catches light.
The ryū is associated with water, rainfall, protection, authority, wisdom, transformation and elemental force; unlike the winged dragons of European imagery, the East Asian dragon is serpentine and bound to rivers, clouds, oceans and weather. The tiger embodies courage, power, protection and ferocity, and in Japanese art masters the wind; the eagle represents clear vision, independence, resolve and martial strength, its downward movement suggesting decisive action. Together they form a classic hierarchy centered on power, protection, self-command and forward momentum.
The reflective body shifts between navy, cobalt shadow, blue-black and silvery indigo, the silver-white sleeves between pearl gray and pale blue-gray. A large diamond quilt across body and sleeves gives light padding, warmth and a structured silhouette, finished with pale gray and dark navy striped ribbing, a gold-tone metal zipper, angled welt pockets with pale trim and a smooth pale lining. The jacket appears consistent with HOUSTON sukajan production from the late 1990s through the 2000s; the label is associated with Japan's amekaji tradition of reinterpreting American military, workwear and casual garments, and this piece sits between military-inspired fashion, rockabilly, tattoo art and Japanese archive streetwear.
Details
- Maker: HOUSTON

Condition
- Vintage pre-owned condition with visible satin creasing, storage folds, directional sheen, embroidery-related surface movement and age-appropriate textile character.
- The navy-and-silver color blocking remains strong; the back dragon is visually complete, and the tiger, eagle, clouds and sleeve dragons remain clearly articulated.
- Minor raised fibers, isolated loose thread ends, gentle edge wear or small irregularities may be present within densely embroidered areas.
- The diamond quilting remains visible; the striped collar, cuffs and waistband are structurally cohesive, with normal softening, light waviness, mild pilling and age-related relaxation.
- Zipper, body panels, sleeves, pocket openings, lining, cuffs, collar and waistband are present, and no major tear, missing panel or extensive embroidery loss is visible in the photographs. Not presented as factory-new; additional photographs are available on request.
Preservation Guidance
- Professional dry cleaning by a specialist in embroidered satin and padded vintage garments; do not machine wash, bleach, soak, scrub, wring or tumble dry.
- Do not iron directly over the embroidery; heat and pressure can flatten threadwork or alter the satin sheen.
- Keep the satin away from rough straps, hook-and-loop fasteners, sharp jewelry and abrasive surfaces, which can snag it.
- Store on a broad padded hanger in a breathable cover, away from direct sunlight, humidity, smoke, perfume and prolonged compression.
- Align the lower zipper components carefully, keep lining and satin clear of the teeth, and do not force the slider.
