Suspended in matched symmetry, these large gilt lanterns were made to frame a Buddhist sanctum with vertical light. Double rings and tiered yōraku-style chain drops, echoes of the jeweled strands that adorn Buddhist deities, cast a ceremonial shimmer that carries across a room, and the pair is wired, ready for inspection and a return to light.
The Piece
This pair of hanging altar lanterns belongs to the architectural language of the Buddhist interior, where suspended ritual hardware frames the sanctum with vertical light and cascading ornament. Yōraku, the jeweled pendant strands of Buddhist adornment, are translated here into tiered chain drops beneath a double-ring format, producing a shimmer that reads at distance against black lacquer and gold-toned altar interiors.
Each lantern assembly comprises an upper ornament section and a lantern body with a receiver, hung as a matched pair to frame an altar symmetrically. Electrical wiring is present, converting the pair into functional liturgical lighting. Because wiring ages differently from metalwork, it should be regarded as legacy, with inspection or professional rewiring planned before regular use.
