A modern A-2 in heavyweight horsehide, painted across the back with a falling pin-up beneath the words “The End of the World” and rows of aircraft tally markings. Near-unused, it is an assertive homage to Army Air Forces personalization, at the meeting point of historical tribute and contemporary craft.
The Piece
Offered here is Flying Leather Co.'s interpretation of the A-2, rendered in heavyweight horsehide with a fully painted back panel. The A-2 is among the most mythologized garments in American military history: originally issued to Army Air Forces aircrews, it became a canvas for pin-up art, squadron insignia, mission tallies, names and slogans. This jacket is not a wartime original but a modern recreation of that culture, executed with theatrical conviction in the space between reproduction and artistic reinterpretation.
The back carries the heart of the composition: the script “The End of the World” arching like a final curtain over a pin-up figure caught in mid-fall, with rows of kill-style markings referencing WWII enemy aircraft types. These are historically grounded symbols from wartime aviation marking systems, used here as part of an aesthetic reconstruction of pilot culture; they give the piece its power and also make it context-sensitive, best suited to a knowledgeable collector.
The front balances the drama with structured military identity: a U.S. flag chest patch, a fighter aircraft illustration in the manner of a P-47 or similar warbird, a cartoon squadron-style emblem patch and a leather pilot-wings badge. Together they read as a composite squadron jacket, a homage to several narratives rather than a single pilot's piece. The patches are surface-applied rather than stitched through, favoring comfort over strict military construction.
The horsehide has the dense, slightly pebbled texture that records time, set in a structured A-2 silhouette with period-correct ribbing and a reproduction WWII-style zipper with a bell-shaped end. The painted finish will continue to evolve with wear, and the jacket serves as well on display as it does worn.
