Shugendō: The Mountain Ascetics

Shugendō (修験道), the way of acquiring power through austerity, is a tradition of mountain practice that fuses ancient Japanese reverence for sacred peaks with esoteric Buddhism. Its practitioners, the yamabushi, those who sleep in the mountains, walk ridges, fast, chant and stand beneath waterfalls to gain spiritual power, and have long served as healers and diviners in the villages below.

The dress and tools of a yamabushi

  • Tokin. A small black cap worn on the forehead.
  • Suzukake. A robe with pompom-like tassels on a sash.
  • Horagai. A conch-shell trumpet, blown to signal and to purify.
  • Shakujō. A ringed staff.
  • Oi. A wooden backpack altar, often carved and lacquered, carrying images and ritual tools into the mountains.

History

Shugendō took shape in the Heian period and organised into two great branches, one linked to Tendai and one to Shingon. In 1872 the Meiji government banned it as part of the separation of kami and buddhas, and many of its temples and objects were dispersed. It revived after 1945, and the pilgrimages of Ōmine and Dewa are again walked by thousands.

Collecting notes

  • Oi altars, conch trumpets with metal mouthpieces and cords, Zaō Gongen plaques and portable images are the characteristic collectables of Shugendō.
  • Much material left its temples after 1872. Where provenance survives, it adds meaning and value.
