Gongen: Buddhas in the Form of Kami

Gongen (権現), provisional manifestation, is the title given to a buddha or bodhisattva who appears in Japan in the form of a kami. Within the old fusion of kami and buddhas, gongen were among the most powerful deities of all, especially in the sacred mountains, and their images are some of the most dramatic in Japanese religious art.

Zaō Gongen

Zaō Gongen is the principal deity of Shugendō, said to have appeared to En no Gyōja on Mount Kinpu in Yoshino. He is a blue-bodied, furious figure with flaming hair, one leg raised high in a kick, the right hand brandishing a vajra and the left on the hip. The great Zaō Gongen of Kinpusenji in Yoshino, seven metres tall, is shown to the public only on special occasions. Bronze plaques of Zaō Gongen, incised with his image, were offered on sacred peaks.

Other gongen

  • Kumano Gongen. The deities of the three great Kumano shrines, identified with Amida, Yakushi and Senju Kannon, focus of a medieval pilgrimage of emperors and commoners.
  • Akiba Gongen. A protector against fire, shown as a winged, beaked figure with a sword, standing on a white fox amid flames. His cult spread through Edo, a city of wood that feared fire above all.
  • Atago Gongen. The deity of Mount Atago in Kyoto, with Shōgun Jizō as its original form, honoured by warriors and also against fire.
  • Tōshō Daigongen. The deified Tokugawa Ieyasu, enshrined at Nikkō, the last and greatest of the gongen.

Collecting notes

  • Gongen images belong to a world that was officially dismantled in the Meiji period, and many surviving pieces came from dissolved shrine-temples.
  • Zaō Gongen figures and plaques, and Akiba Gongen in portable shrines, are the forms most often found.
