Gyokugan: Crystal Eyes

Gyokugan (玉眼), jewel eyes, are eyes of rock crystal inlaid into a wooden statue from the inside. Light catching the crystal makes the eyes glisten as if alive, and the technique became one of the hallmarks of the realistic sculpture of the Kamakura period. For collectors, crystal eyes are often a sign of a capable workshop.

How they were made

The sculptor hollowed the head, often splitting the face away from the back, and cut eye openings through the wood. Thin lenses of crystal were shaped to the curve of the eye and set from inside. Behind each lens, the iris and pupil were painted on paper or directly on the crystal, and the whole was backed with paper and held in place with small wooden pins. The face was then rejoined.

History

Crystal eyes appear in the twelfth century, and the Amida triad of Chōgakuji near Nara, dated 1151, is among the earliest documented examples. The sculptors of the Kei school, including Unkei and Kaikei, made them standard in the Kamakura period, and they remained common through the Edo period, when glass sometimes replaced crystal.

Judging gyokugan

  • Crystal is colder and harder than glass; old crystal often shows tiny inclusions.
  • The painted pupil behind the lens should sit naturally. Later replacement eyes can look fixed or mismatched.
  • Gyokugan were sometimes added to older figures during restoration, so their presence alone does not date a statue.
  • Crystal also appears in the jewel between the brows, byakugō, and the topknot jewel. See Marks of the Buddha.
