Curator’s Note: Material is not decoration. It is structure, process, and time made visible. Understanding how an object is made is essential to understanding how it ages, how it fails, and how it should be cared for. Many collecting errors come from reading surface appearance without material literacy.

Material Before Style
Style may suggest period or school, but material determines construction limits, vulnerability, and restoration risk. Correct reading begins with what the object is made from, not how it looks.
Primary Materials in Buddhist Sculpture
Wood
Wood is the most common material in Japanese Buddhist statuary. It allows refinement of form but is highly sensitive to humidity and structural stress.
- Common techniques: ichiboku-zukuri, yosegi-zukuri
- Aging signs: shrinkage cracks, joint separation
- Red flag: filled cracks disguised as age
Lacquer
Lacquer functions both as surface protection and structural skin. It ages differently from wood beneath and should never be judged by gloss alone.
- Often layered over wood or cloth cores
- Aging signs: lifting, fine fissures
- Red flag: modern overcoating to simulate “freshness”
Gilt
Gilding is a surface application, not a material class. It indicates doctrinal emphasis but introduces light sensitivity and conservation risk.
- Applied over lacquer or bole layers
- Aging signs: thinning, abrasion
- Red flag: uniform re-gilding without wear variation
Bronze
Bronze statues are structurally stable but visually deceptive. Surface patina may obscure casting detail or conceal later intervention.
- Common in earlier periods and ritual contexts
- Aging signs: stable patination, casting seams
- Red flag: aggressive polishing removing historical surface
Material-Specific Misreadings
- Assuming cracks indicate damage rather than age
- Equating shine with condition
- Treating surface loss as failure rather than history
Material & Restoration Risk
Each material imposes strict limits on acceptable intervention. Wood tolerates stabilization; lacquer demands restraint; gilt requires non-invasive care; bronze requires surface preservation.
