Gandhāra Buddhist Art

Gandhāra was an ancient region in what is now northern Pakistan and eastern Afghanistan, on the crossroads of the Silk Road. Under the Kushan rulers, in the first centuries of the common era, its sculptors created some of the earliest images of the Buddha in human form, blending Indian Buddhism with the classical art of the Hellenistic world. The style travelled east along the Silk Road and, in time, reached Japan.

The Gandhāran style

  • Material. Grey or green-grey schist, and stucco for later works.
  • The Buddha. Wavy hair gathered in a topknot, a serene face with classical features, and a heavy robe falling in deep folds like a toga.
  • Bodhisattvas. Princely figures with moustaches, turbans, jewellery and sandals, often Maitreya, the future Buddha, holding a water flask.
  • Reliefs. Narrative panels of the Buddha's life and previous lives, framed by Corinthian pilasters.

From Gandhāra to Japan

The idea of the Buddha in human form, the topknot, the halo and the draped robe passed through Central Asia and China to Japan. Gandhāran art has a special place in Japanese collecting: in the late twentieth century, Japanese scholars and collectors played a large part in the study and preservation of Silk Road art.

Collecting notes

  • Provenance is essential. Look for documented ownership history and export, ideally over several decades. See The Ethics of Collecting Sacred Art.
  • Schist surfaces should show natural weathering and encrustation. Modern carvings and recut surfaces are common.
  • Heads and reliefs are the forms most often found; complete standing figures are rare.
