Before You Buy: A Collector's Checklist

Buying a piece from Japan is straightforward when you know what to check. This checklist gathers the questions our curator desk answers most often, so that you can buy with confidence and without surprises.

The piece itself

  • Condition. Read the condition rank and the full description. Our guide to Japanese condition ranks explains each grade.
  • Photographs. Look at every image, including bases, interiors, backs and labels. Ask for more if you need them.
  • Measurements. Check dimensions and weight in centimetres and kilograms, and imagine the piece in its place.
  • Completeness. Note which boxes, papers, accessories and parts are included.
  • Authenticity. Every piece is examined in Japan, and our authenticity guarantee applies.

Will it work and fit?

  • Electrical items. Japan uses 100 volts at 50 or 60 hertz. See Japanese appliances abroad.
  • Clothing and footwear. Japanese sizes run differently. Compare flat measurements with a garment you own, and see our shoe size and ring size charts.
  • Restricted materials. Ivory, tortoiseshell, some corals and exotic skins are regulated. We describe materials accurately and tell you before purchase if a piece cannot travel to you.

Shipping and duties

  • Route. Most pieces travel as insured, tracked parcels. Large or heavy pieces may travel crated or as cargo, with freight arranged after the order. Our shipping policy explains each route.
  • Duties and taxes. How duties are handled depends on your country and the value of the order. See import duties on goods from Japan and our shipping policy.
  • Delivery. Make sure someone can sign for high-value parcels.

Payment and terms

When in doubt, ask

If anything is unclear, write to the curator desk before ordering. We reply within one to three business days, and we would always rather answer a question than resolve a surprise.
