The motorcycle jacket rendered entirely in black sequins: a Junya Watanabe Spring/Summer 2021 rider with the full asymmetric-zip architecture, belted hem and zipped cuffs, shimmering like oil on water.
The Piece
The biker jacket is one of Junya Watanabe's touchstones. He has cut it in leather, tartan, denim and lace, and for Spring/Summer 2021 he covered it in sequins, a season when his womenswear played heavily with the tension between hard-edged classics and evening surfaces.
Model JG-J002, dated AD2020 on the care label, follows the rider pattern faithfully: notched collar with snap tabs, asymmetric front zip, slanted zip pockets, a snap-tab belt at the hem and zipped cuffs. Every surface is covered in small black sequins that pick up blue and green in the light, set on a polyester base and lined in smooth black cupro.
The fit is close and slightly cropped, as a rider should be, with a narrow sleeve. It works as a statement over a white shirt and denim, or as the one decorative note against an otherwise severe black look.
Sequin outerwear from Junya is produced in small quantities and the surfaces are delicate, so clean examples with complete sequin coverage are increasingly scarce.
