A double-faced coat in wool, angora and cashgora from Jil Sander’s autumn-winter 2009 womenswear under Raf Simons, in a deep forest green with hand-finished edges and silk-lined sleeves.
The Piece
Raf Simons’s womenswear for Jil Sander, from 2005 to 2012, is remembered for its almost severe purity and for fabrics of extraordinary quality, and the coats of those years are its high point. Autumn-winter 2009 belongs to the middle of his tenure, when that minimalism was at its most assured.
This coat is cut from double-faced cloth: two layers woven together and finished by hand at every edge, so the coat needs no lining in the body and drapes with real softness. The blend is 50% wool, 45% angora and 5% cashgora, and only the sleeves are lined, in a cupro and silk mix. It is double-breasted with a notched lapel, two patch pockets and a long seamed back with a vent, and the colour is the dark, mossy green that Jil Sander has made its own. The model is 20092W00970, made in Italy.
Size 38 measures 43 cm across the shoulder and 95 cm long, falling to the knee with a gently fitted line. It was bought new and stored carefully for many years.
Double-faced angora coats of this level were among the most expensive pieces Jil Sander produced, made by hand-finishing two layers of cloth together, and they are rarely offered in such clean condition. The forest green is subtle and versatile, reading almost black in low light and rich green in daylight.
