Suiban and Doban: Trays for Stones

A viewing stone may sit on a carved stand, or it may rise from a shallow tray of sand or water like an island from the sea. Ceramic trays are suiban 水盤; bronze trays are doban 銅盤. Both are also used in ikebana, and many fine examples were made for both arts.

Suiban

Ceramic suiban are made in oval, rectangular and round forms, glazed or unglazed, with no drainage hole. Celadon, blue, white and pale glazes suggest water; unglazed trays suit a dry landscape of sand. Japanese and Chinese suiban by named makers are collected alongside bonsai pots.

Doban

Bronze trays bring weight and age. Cast in Takaoka and other bronze centres, they range from plain, shallow ovals to trays with low relief of waves or clouds. A good patina, dark and even, is prized; never polish it.

Using a tray

  • Fill with fine sand, levelled or raked, or with a little water for the effect of a lake or sea.
  • The stone should sit to one side, not dead centre, leaving space to suggest distance.
  • Dry trays fully before storing to protect glazes and patinas.

Collecting notes

  • Check ceramic trays for hairline cracks by tapping and by holding them to the light.
  • Bronze trays are heavy; they need firm packing at the rim to avoid dents.
