Collecting Pots, Stones and Stands

For collectors outside Japan, the richest part of the bonsai world is not the trees but the objects: antique Chinese and Japanese pots, viewing stones on their carved stands, display tables, scrolls and tools. They carry the history and taste of the art, and they travel safely. This guide sets out what to look for.

What to collect

  • Antique Chinese pots: kowatari, nakawatari and shinto. See Kowatari, Nakawatari and Shinto.
  • Japanese pots by named Tokoname and other makers. See Tokoname.
  • Shōhin pots: small, beautiful and easy to ship.
  • Suiseki with old daiza and boxes. See Suiseki.
  • Display tables and tiered stands, and suiban and doban.
  • Tools by fine makers, and scrolls for display.

Condition

  • Tap pots gently: a clear ring means sound; a dull note suggests a crack.
  • Small rim chips are common on old pots and acceptable if honestly described; restored chips should be disclosed.
  • Natural patina is desirable. Avoid pots that have been scrubbed bright.
  • Stones should be natural; look for saw marks or polishing beyond the flat base.

Marks and boxes

A maker's chop, a signed box and an old collector's inscription all add value and confidence. See Reading Pot Chops, Signatures and Boxes.

How we help

Every piece we offer is examined in Japan and carries our authenticity guarantee, with measurements, weight and photographs of the base, chop and box. Shipping is insured and tracked. All sales are final, so ask us anything before you buy.

In the collection

Browse bonsai and suiseki, Chinese decorative arts and ikebana vessels. Our curator desk can search Japan for a particular pot, stone or stand; replies follow within 1–3 business days.
