Caring for Tin Toys

Vintage tin plate toys are printed sheet steel, and their two great enemies are rust and wear to the printed surface. Careful handling and a dry home will keep them in the condition collectors value.

Climate

  • Keep toys in a dry room with stable humidity. Damp air causes rust, which spreads under the printing.
  • Avoid lofts, cellars and outside walls, where temperature and humidity swing.
  • A closed display cabinet protects toys from dust and sudden changes in humidity.

Handling

  • Handle toys with clean, dry hands or soft cotton gloves. Skin oils can mark the printed surface and encourage rust.
  • Hold the body of the toy rather than its arms, antennae or other fragile parts.

Cleaning

  • Dust with a soft brush or a soft dry cloth.
  • Never use water, solvents or polish on lithographed tin, which can lift or dissolve the printing.
  • Rust and old corrosion should be treated by a specialist.

Mechanisms

  • Remove batteries from battery operated toys before storage. Leaking batteries are a common cause of damage.
  • Run old toys only briefly and gently, and do not overwind clockwork motors.
  • If a mechanism stops, do not force it. Many old motors can be repaired by a toy restorer.

Boxes

  • Original boxes are often as valuable as the toys inside, so keep them away from light, which fades box art.
  • Store the toy in its box with its original inserts, but do not force a toy into a box that is tight.
  • Keep boxes flat and dry, and avoid adhesive tape for repairs.
