Japanese Bonsai Tools

Japanese bonsai tools are forged with the same care as kitchen knives and woodworking chisels, and the best are used for a lifetime. Several were invented for bonsai, above all the concave branch cutter, which leaves a hollow wound that heals almost without a scar.

Tool Japanese Use
Concave branch cutter Matakiri 又切 Removes branches with a hollow cut that heals flat
Knob cutter Kobukiri こぶ切 Removes stubs and knobs with a rounded bite
Bonsai shears Hasami 鋏 Trims twigs, leaves and roots
Wire cutter Harigane-kiri 針金切 Cuts wire close to the bark without damage
Jin pliers Jin-yattoko ジンやっとこ Strips bark and shapes deadwood
Root hook Nekaki 根掻き Combs out roots when repotting
Brush and spatula Hōki, herazuki Tidies soil and presses moss

Steel and finish

Tools come in black carbon steel, which takes the keenest edge but must be kept dry and oiled, and in stainless steel, which is easier to care for. Fine makers, among them Masakuni and Kaneshin, are known by their stamps; the finest pieces are hand-forged and sharpened by the maker.

Wire

Trees are shaped with wire: anodised aluminium for deciduous trees and beginners, annealed copper for conifers, which holds more strongly at a thinner gauge. Wire is removed before it marks the bark.

Caring for tools

  • Clean sap after use, dry thoroughly and wipe carbon steel with a light camellia oil.
  • Send fine cutters back to a specialist for sharpening rather than grinding them at home.
  • Store tools in a roll or case so the edges never touch.

Collecting notes

  • Tools travel easily and make fine gifts. Sets in wooden boxes by named makers are especially prized.
  • Bladed tools cannot travel in cabin baggage; ours are packed and sent by post, edges guarded.
