Bokuseki: Zen Calligraphy

Bokuseki (墨跡), ink traces, is the name given to calligraphy written by Zen masters. Valued less for elegance than for the spirit of the writer, these works were treasured as the living presence of a teacher. Through the tea ceremony they became the most important scrolls in Japanese aesthetic life.

The tea room scroll

The tea master Sen no Rikyū is recorded as saying that no utensil is more important than the hanging scroll, and that the calligraphy of a Zen priest is the finest of all. A Zen phrase in the alcove sets the theme of a gathering. The most common format is a single vertical line, ichigyōmono, of five to seven characters. See Zen and Tea.

Phrases to know

  • 日々是好日, nichinichi kore kōjitsu: every day is a good day.
  • 喫茶去, kissako: go and have some tea.
  • 無, mu: nothing, the most famous kōan answer.
  • 一期一会, ichigo ichie: one time, one meeting.
  • 和敬清寂, wa kei sei jaku: harmony, respect, purity, tranquillity, the four principles of tea.
  • 関, kan: the barrier, a gate of awakening.

Who wrote them

The earliest prized bokuseki are by Chinese masters of the Song and Yuan dynasties, brought to Japan by returning monks. In Japan the abbots of Daitokuji, the temple most closely bound to tea, wrote countless scrolls for tea practitioners, and their works remain the backbone of the tradition. Ikkyū, Hakuin, Sengai and many others are prized for their individuality.

Reading a scroll

  • The signature usually gives the temple and the writer's name, followed by seals.
  • A box inscription by the writer or a later abbot confirms the attribution. See Glossary of Box Inscriptions.
  • The mounting, often in fine brocade chosen for tea, is part of the work's value.
