One of the most celebrated Junya Watanabe MAN x Levi's pieces: a 503 rebuilt entirely from indigo patchwork, sashiko-stitched cotton, kasuri and striped panels, with a black leather coin pocket.
The Piece
For Spring/Summer 2015 Junya Watanabe built his MAN collection around indigo, the colour that runs through Japanese work clothing from farm jackets to fishermen's coats. The patchwork Levi's from that season are now regarded as some of the finest of the whole collaboration, and this all-indigo version, with no outside colours or prints, is the one collectors name first.
The base is a Levi's 503 with its leather two-horse patch (W30 L33) still at the back waistband. Almost every centimetre of it has been overlaid with hand-cut panels: sashiko-dotted indigo, ikat-like kasuri squares, hickory and pinstripe denim, faded chambray and a few narrow brown-and-black stripes. The panels are attached with raw, fraying edges and bold zigzag and cross-stitch darning in black thread, the vocabulary of Japanese boro mending. The right coin pocket is faced in black leather and the waistband is lined in paisley.
The cloth mixes cotton with a little wool and linen, so the panels have different weights and surfaces; it reads as a textile piece as much as a pair of jeans.
Tagged XS, which the house cuts generously: the waist measures about 82 cm around and the cropped, slightly loose leg ends just below the knee with a 50 cm inseam, worn as a three-quarter trouser.
