An unworn single riders jacket in black horsehide from Ajmone, the small Italian leather house founded by Roberto and Stefano Aimone, finished with polished brass Excella zips and a dark green cupro lining.

The Piece

Ajmone was founded in 2015 by Roberto Aimone and his son Stefano, and it works almost entirely in leather outerwear. The house treats the riders jacket the way a tailor treats a suit: vegetable-tanned hides that keep their natural grain and marks, close-fitting patterns, and production in small, numbered runs that read more like editions than collections. In Japan the label is carried by a handful of specialist menswear shops, and it is followed closely by collectors who want an Italian alternative to the heavy American and Japanese horsehide jackets.

This is the single riders jacket in black horsehide. The hide has the slightly mottled, hand-finished surface that Ajmone is known for, with darker tones gathering at the seams and lighter highlights across the shoulders. The band collar closes with a brass snap, and the front, chest pocket, hand pockets and cuffs all run on polished brass YKK Excella zips, the top tier of the YKK range. Inside, a dark green cupro lining shows only when the jacket opens.

The cut is slim and short, built to sit at the hip and follow the shoulder closely, so it wears as easily over a fine knit with trousers as it does with denim. Horsehide starts firm and settles to the body with wear, and this example has not yet begun that process.

It has only been tried on and comes with the original Ajmone hanger and swing tags, an uncommon opportunity to begin the ageing of a fine horsehide jacket from the very start.
