Two-Sided Hawaiian Souvenir Jacket with Hula Dancers, Island Dragon, Palm Trees and Embroidered Aloha Motifs
A richly embroidered reversible sukajan that carries the color and mythology of Hawaii across two completely different satin compositions.
One side features a luminous blue Hawaiian landscape with palm trees, hula dancers, historic architecture and a central royal monument. Reverse the jacket to reveal a warm copper-brown design dominated by a dramatic island dragon, the word “Aloha,” and the embroidered names of the Hawaiian Islands.
Part Japanese souvenir-jacket tradition, part tropical travel keepsake, this is a wonderfully unusual crossover piece with a softer, more romantic character than the military eagles and roaring tigers commonly found on sukajan jackets.
Collector’s Hook
🌺 Hawaii by way of Yokosuka.
This reversible jacket transforms from a cool blue island panorama into a glowing copper dragon composition, giving the wearer two distinct visual stories in one garment.

Construction: Fully reversible raglan-sleeve jacket

Blue Hawaii Side
The blue satin side presents an embroidered tropical panorama beneath the flowing word:
“Hawaii”
A monumental Hawaiian figure stands at the center, framed by palm trees, historic red architecture and four hula dancers arranged throughout the lower composition.
The embroidery uses muted green, coral, ivory, gold and red threads against the blue satin ground, creating the appearance of a mid-century travel postcard translated into thread.
The front is decorated with mirrored surfers riding stylized waves, adding a playful coastal motif that balances the more elaborate scene across the back.
White satin sleeves, dark blue piping and striped navy-and-cream ribbing complete this side.
Aloha Dragon Side
The reverse changes completely to a warm copper-brown satin body framed by silver-white sleeves.
Across the back, the gold embroidered word “Aloha” appears above an elongated white-and-pink dragon twisting through clouds and stylized island terrain.
The dragon is surrounded by the names of the principal Hawaiian Islands:
Kauai
Oahu
Maui
Molokai
Hawaii
Niihau
Lanai
Kahoolawe
This unusual composition reimagines a traditional East Asian dragon as a guardian of the Hawaiian archipelago.
The front features mirrored dragon heads surrounded by pink and gold flowers, cloud forms and decorative foliage. Deep green and cream striped ribbing gives this side its own distinctive palette.
Motif Meaning
Dragon
The dragon traditionally represents protection, elemental power, good fortune and transformation. Here it becomes a symbolic guardian linking the islands together beneath the welcoming word “Aloha.”
Hula Dancers
Hula is a narrative art form expressed through movement, chant and gesture. The dancers create a celebratory island scene while giving the jacket the character of a classic Hawaiian souvenir.
Palm Trees and Tropical Landscape
Palm trees evoke travel, warmth and island life, while the architectural and monumental elements suggest Honolulu’s historic civic landscape.
Aloha
More than a greeting, “Aloha” conveys affection, compassion, welcome and mutual respect. Its placement above the dragon softens the jacket’s powerful mythic imagery with a distinctly Hawaiian spirit.
Surfers and Waves
The mirrored surfers celebrate Hawaii’s enduring connection to ocean culture. Their compact chest placement gives the blue side a playful mid-century souvenir aesthetic.
Style and Construction
- Fully reversible design
- Smooth satin-finish fabric
- Embroidered artwork on both backs
- Embroidered chest motifs on both fronts
- Raglan sleeves
- Full-length reversible zipper
- Angled hand pockets
- Striped rib-knit collar, cuffs and waistband
- Contrast piping along sleeve panels
- Compact vintage bomber silhouette
- Multicolor machine embroidery
The two sides are deliberately different in mood. The blue side feels airy, scenic and nostalgic, while the copper side is warmer, more symbolic and dramatic.
Period Assessment
The reversible synthetic satin construction, densely embroidered souvenir imagery and crossover Japanese-Hawaiian styling appear consistent with a late-20th to early-21st-century sukajan revival jacket.
Its design draws directly from postwar Japanese souvenir-jacket traditions while replacing conventional military imagery with tropical travel and Aloha iconography.
Condition
Vintage pre-owned condition with natural signs of age and previous wear.
The satin may display gentle creasing, minor surface variation, light handling marks or small age-related imperfections. Rib-knit areas may show vintage softness or mild wear. The embroidery remains colorful, decorative and visually prominent.
Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an essential part of the condition description.
Size and Fit
Tagged Size: M
Japanese and vintage souvenir-jacket sizing can fit smaller or shorter than contemporary Western sizing. This piece may suit approximately a fitted unisex Small to Medium, depending on body shape and preferred layering.
Please compare the garment’s measurements with a jacket that fits you comfortably before purchase.
