Rare Double-Sided Japanese Souvenir Jacket with Memorial Tiger, Born to Battle Eagle, Dragon and Southern Americana Embroidery
Two embroidered worlds share one jacket.
One side presents a roaring tiger beneath Mount Fuji with the striking inscription “Memorial Japan, S.F.D. Texas.” Reverse it to reveal a brilliantly colored eagle, dragon and starred battle emblem surrounded by clouds, blossoms and the words “Born to Battle” and “Japan.”
Rendered across contrasting black, cream, navy and golden satin, this vintage reversible sukajan combines classic Japanese souvenir imagery with an unusual American serviceman-style narrative. It is bold, deeply individual and full of the cross-cultural visual language that makes vintage sukajan jackets so collectible.
🐯 Memorial Japan on one side. Born to Battle on the other.
The tiger and Mount Fuji composition feels unmistakably Japanese, while the eagle, battle emblem and Texas inscription bring in a rugged Americana dimension. Rather than offering two variations of the same design, this jacket delivers two entirely different personalities.
Wear the black-and-cream tiger side for classic souvenir-jacket drama. Turn it inside out for a vivid navy-and-gold statement covered in military-inspired symbolism, dragon embroidery and patriotic Americana.

Memorial Japan Tiger Side
The black satin side centers on a powerful tiger perched upon a rocky outcrop beneath a snow-capped Mount Fuji.
The tiger is embroidered in warm gold, amber, black, cream and white, with a dramatically open mouth and sharply defined claws. Bamboo leaves surround the animal, reinforcing the traditional Japanese landscape atmosphere.
Above the mountain, flowing silver embroidery reads:
“Memorial Japan”
Below the tiger, bold block lettering reads:
“S.F.D. Texas”
The unusual combination gives the jacket the character of a personalized military souvenir or commemorative travel piece. The exact meaning of the initials remains open, adding an intriguing layer of mystery to the garment’s history.
Cream satin raglan sleeves frame the black body, while narrow golden piping traces the panel seams. Burgundy, cream and gold striped ribbing finishes the collar, cuffs and waistband.
Born to Battle Eagle Side
The navy reverse is substantially more elaborate, transforming the jacket into a richly embroidered panorama.
At the center, a white eagle descends with wings spread and talons extended. Behind it appears a red, blue and white starred diagonal-cross battle emblem, creating a forceful Southern Americana visual reference.
The eagle is surrounded by:
- A long serpentine dragon
- Stylized clouds and wind forms
- Cherry blossom accents
- Mount Fuji
- Botanical and flame-like forms
- Decorative cords and ornamental shapes
- The inscription “Born to Battle”
- Large “Japan” lettering near the hem
The embroidery uses silver, ivory, teal, burgundy, pink, green and gold thread against deep navy satin. The golden-orange sleeves intensify the contrast, giving this side an almost heraldic quality.
Front Embroidery
The navy-and-gold side features two mirrored eagle emblems across the chest.
Each eagle is embroidered in red, cream and gold and framed by pale blue cloud scrolls. The symmetrical arrangement gives the front a balanced varsity-like appearance without competing with the complex artwork across the back.
Angled hand pockets are trimmed with golden arrow-shaped detailing, matching the sleeves and reinforcing the jacket’s vintage athletic silhouette.
The tiger side is expected to provide the contrasting reverse presentation through the same fully reversible zipper construction and pocket system.
Motif Meaning
Tiger
In Japanese decorative culture, the tiger represents courage, protection, strength and fearless authority. Although tigers are not native to Japan, they became a major subject in Japanese painting, textiles, tattooing and military-inspired fashion.
Its placement beneath Mount Fuji creates a particularly commanding image, bringing together physical strength and Japan’s most recognizable sacred mountain.
Eagle
The eagle introduces a strong American identity. It traditionally represents freedom, vigilance, military strength and elevated vision.
Its position over the starred battle emblem creates an unmistakably martial composition, directly echoing the jacket’s “Born to Battle” inscription.
Dragon
The dragon symbolizes elemental energy, command, transformation and supernatural protection. Unlike the heavier central tiger, the dragon curves around the eagle composition, acting almost as a guardian frame.
Mount Fuji
Mount Fuji serves as the visual anchor connecting both sides to Japan. It represents endurance, spiritual elevation, national identity and permanence.
Cherry Blossoms
Cherry blossoms bring delicacy and impermanence into an otherwise powerful military composition. Their brief seasonal beauty has long been associated with the transience of life, making them an especially meaningful counterpoint to the tiger, eagle and battle imagery.
Style and Construction
This jacket follows the classic reversible sukajan format:
- Smooth satin-finish body
- Fully reversible construction
- Raglan sleeves
- Extensive multicolor machine embroidery
- Embroidered backs on both sides
- Embroidered chest motifs
- Full-length reversible zipper
- Angled hand pockets
- Striped rib-knit collar
- Matching rib-knit cuffs and waistband
- Contrasting sleeve panels
- Decorative piping
- Compact vintage bomber silhouette
The embroidery varies from broad satin stitching to tightly layered directional threadwork. The tiger’s fur, eagle feathers and dragon scales are created through changes in stitch density and angle, allowing the artwork to catch light differently across the jacket.
Color Architecture
Side One
Body: Black
Sleeves: Warm cream
Embroidery: Gold, cream, amber, burgundy, white and black
Trim: Burgundy, cream and gold
Side Two
Body: Deep navy
Sleeves: Golden orange
Embroidery: Silver, ivory, red, burgundy, teal, pink, green and gold
Trim: Burgundy, cream and dark brown
The two palettes are distinctly different but connected through the shared burgundy and gold ribbing.
Period Assessment
The synthetic satin construction, reversible engineering, extensive multicolor embroidery and military-Americana revival styling appear consistent with a late-20th-century vintage Japanese souvenir jacket, likely from the 1980s or 1990s.
The artwork intentionally draws from earlier postwar sukajan traditions while embracing the louder proportions, saturated colors and maximal embroidery associated with later Japanese revival fashion.
Condition
Vintage pre-owned condition with signs of age and previous wear appropriate to a reversible satin garment.
The jacket displays natural surface creasing, handling variation and gentle age-related wear. The rib-knit collar, cuffs and waistband show vintage softness and minor wear. Small loose threads, light marks or subtle irregularities may be present throughout.
The embroidered compositions remain vivid and visually dominant, with the tiger, eagle, dragon and lettering retaining strong definition.
Please review every photograph carefully, as the images form an essential part of the condition description.
Approximate Measurements
Measurements are taken flat in centimeters:
A, Body Length: approximately 58 cm
B, Pit-to-Pit Width: approximately 59 cm
C, Sleeve Length from Collar: approximately 78 cm
The approximate 59 cm pit-to-pit measurement suggests a chest circumference of around 118 cm before allowing for movement and layering.
Based on the proportions, this jacket may suit approximately a unisex Medium to Large, depending on body shape and preferred fit. The body is relatively compact while the raglan sleeves provide additional shoulder flexibility.
Please compare these measurements with a well-fitting jacket rather than relying solely on the estimated size range.
