Two complete worlds of Japanese visual culture share one garment. On black velvet, the oni ruler Shuten-Dōji glowers beneath the words “KING OF OGRE”; reversed, a crimson satin field erupts with Ryūtaro, dragons and horimono-inspired ornament. The Piece

This rare reversible sukajan comes from B.R.M., short for Bakuretsu Ranman Musume, a label within the Efu-Shokai and Ted Company sphere of Japanese Americana. Matching examples are identified internationally as the B.R.M. Shuten-Dōji and Ryūtaro reversible series.

The black velvet side is dominated by a ferocious full-back portrait of Shuten-Dōji, traditionally regarded as one of Japan’s most formidable oni. His blazing mane radiates outward through layered threadwork, giving the image a sculptural, almost flame-like presence, and the embroidered phrase “KING OF OGRE” reinforces the theatrical presentation. Floral embroidery in white, blush and muted seasonal tones extends across the sleeves and shoulders, setting menace beside beauty and mortality beside bloom. Additional front embroidery keeps the design visually complete whether the jacket is worn open or zipped.

The reverse opens into an entirely different palette. Rich red satin forms the ground for a tattoo-inspired Ryūtaro composition populated by dragons, mythic figures and sweeping ornamental lines, recalling the visual density of Japanese irezumi and horimono, where the human body becomes a continuous narrative surface. Black, gold, ivory and darker crimson details move across the satin with the energy of a vintage tattoo flash panel translated into a garment.

Where Tedman became known for its red Lucky Devil mascot and playful military-inspired graphics, B.R.M. developed a darker and more ornate identity drawn from warriors, dragons, oni, tattoo imagery, folklore and historical Japanese motifs.
