Under the banner “Soul of Phoenix,” a great bird spreads green, rust, blue and gold plumage across black velvet. Turn this B-R-M jacket inside out and the mood cools to black and ivory satin, inscribed “Perpetual Youth and Longevity”: mythic opulence on one face, graphic restraint on the other.

The Piece

A richly detailed vintage sukajan from B-R-M, Bakuretsu Ranman Musume, built around the label’s dramatic “Soul of Phoenix” design. The primary face combines an inky black velvet-finish body with dense multicolored embroidery: a magnificent phoenix spreads across the back beneath the words “Soul of Phoenix,” surrounded by layered feathers, leaves, jewel-like eye motifs and the inscription “The Secret of Mt. Fuji.”

The velvet ground gives the embroidery unusual depth and luminosity. The back phoenix is worked in green, rust red, blue, gold, ivory and earthy brown threads, its feathers unfurling in layered arcs around a composition that feels part folklore illustration, part Japanese tattoo art and part psychedelic amekaji streetwear. The front continues the story with a circular “The Dwelling of Phoenix” chest emblem, white B-R-M lettering, large feather embroidery along one sleeve, a skeletal bird with web, botanical and geometric imagery along the other, subtle gold scroll embroidery near the pockets and navy-and-ivory striped ribbing. The asymmetrical sleeve artwork makes the jacket especially striking in profile.

Turned inside out, the jacket shows a contrasting black-and-white satin face with a more traditional sukajan structure: a black satin body, bright ivory satin sleeves, burnt-orange, navy and cream striped ribbing, gold piping along the raglan seams and arrow-shaped pocket trim. A stylized phoenix and a small animal figure are embroidered across the chest, and the back carries a large central artwork with Japanese characters and lettering, together with the phrases “Neo Asian Taste Clothing,” “Works From 1997” and “Perpetual Youth and Longevity.” The restrained taupe, ivory, black and rust palette makes this side easier to coordinate while keeping the jacket’s Japanese streetwear identity.

The phoenix gives the jacket a language of rebirth, transformation, endurance and renewed strength, and the reverse inscription extends it into a meditation on vitality and continuation. Rather than reproducing one traditional image literally, the design combines Japanese-inspired animals, decorative foliage, tattoo-style linework, English lettering and late-twentieth-century amekaji graphics into an exuberant wearable collage, two distinct personalities in one jacket.

Construction is fully reversible, with a velvet-finish embroidered outer face, a satin-finish contrasting reverse, dense machine embroidery, raglan sleeves, a full metal zipper, pockets on both sides, striped rib-knit collar, cuffs and waistband, and the classic cropped sukajan bomber silhouette.
