The red little devil of TEDMAN breathes fire at bad luck beneath Mount Fuji on midnight velvet; reversed, the same mascot squares up to a great phoenix-like bird amid sakura, waves and bamboo on luminous copper satin. Two complete faces, full-length sleeve embroidery and a talismanic sense of humor make this Ted Company jacket a charismatic piece of Japanese Americana.
The Piece
A richly embroidered reversible sukajan by TED COMPANY, featuring the TEDMAN little-devil mascot across a deep midnight-black velvet face and an elaborate Japanese landscape across a contrasting copper-gold satin face. Each side is conceived as a separate visual identity: the velvet face dark, graphic, playful and mascot-driven; the satin face luminous, pictorial and rooted in traditional Japanese auspicious imagery. It is a later Japanese streetwear interpretation of the sukajan rather than a replica of a postwar souvenir jacket, with an American bomber shape and striped ribbing carrying distinctly Japanese embroidery.
TEDMAN is the red little devil, recognizable by his compact body, pointed horns, long arrow-tipped tail, mischievous expression, white briefs and exaggerated cartoon energy: not literal evil but a humorous emblem of rebellious luck, bravado and endurance, who moves between military, motorcycle, tattoo, collegiate, workwear and Japanese traditional compositions. On the velvet back he stands in profile with narrowed eyes, blowing a stream of red flame beneath a silver-white Mount Fuji, ringed by white and silver cloud scrolls, bamboo leaves and rhythmic scrollwork. The lettering reads “Tedman’s,” “Good Luck.” and, in large script above a sweeping horizontal band on the lower back, “Japan,” together with the eccentric slogan “Blow You’re Badluck-Off,” embroidered with a double exclamation mark, whose meaning is clear: blow away your bad luck. The dark pile, which can read black, midnight navy or blue-black with the nap, lets the white clouds, silver Fuji, red devil and pale lettering emerge with exceptional clarity.
Both velvet sleeves are embroidered from upper arm toward the cuffs: smaller red devils near the lower sleeves, white cloud scrolls moving vertically and diagonally, muted gold and pale green leaves, and pale forms resembling mountain peaks, birds or landscape elements, alternated with dark stretches of velvet so each motif stays legible. On the front, one chest carries the TEDMAN name above a small red Fuji-like emblem and scrolling clouds; the other a compact red TEDMAN breathing flame, with a pale diagonal form and small leaf or floral details behind him, an asymmetry balanced by scale and shared cloud forms. Dark welt pockets and a reversible metal zipper on dark tape keep the velvet uninterrupted.
The reverse is a warm copper, bronze or muted gold satin body, shifting toward champagne or salmon-gold in the light, with large pearl-white side panels and sleeves outlined in narrow dark piping and burnt-orange ribbing striped in cream and navy. Its back is dominated by a large mythical bird, likely inspired by the Japanese hō-ō or phoenix, its layered wings in pale blue, silver, dark blue, pink, green and muted red, with eye, beak and crest defined in darker thread, moving diagonally forward. A pale Mount Fuji rises above it; sakura branches in pink, ivory, red and muted green, stylized waves at lower left, bamboo shoots and clouds complete the landscape. At the bird’s lower right the small TEDMAN figure stands his ground, and the inscriptions read “Lucky Devil. Tedman’s” across the upper back, “Ted Company Since 1991” at the right with “Good Luck” beneath, and “Japan” in dark outlined script on the lower back.
The two faces form one auspicious vocabulary: Fuji for permanence, aspiration and Japan itself; cherry blossoms for beauty, renewal and impermanence; waves for movement and continuity; bamboo for resilience and flexible strength; the hō-ō, a bird associated with peace, virtue, renewal and harmonious rule, for dignity and grandeur; and TEDMAN for luck, defiance and comic energy. The velvet side shows the devil confronting bad luck with flame, the satin side the tiny “Lucky Devil” facing an immense bird with confidence far beyond his size, a collision of humor and tradition that never erases the meaning of the motifs.

Condition
- Vintage pre-owned condition with visible age-related wear, textile variation, creasing and storage character; not presented as deadstock or factory-new. Both embroidered faces keep substantial color, definition and impact.
- Velvet: natural nap movement and tonal variation, especially across the back, sleeves and near seams or embroidery, with areas lighter, darker, brushed or slightly flattened according to the pile; gentle surface wear and localized pile variation consistent with prior use. The principal TEDMAN figure, Mount Fuji, clouds, lettering, bamboo, sleeve motifs and chest embroidery remain clearly legible, with no major section absent; minor thread irregularities, small raised fibers and light embroidery-edge wear may be present.
- Copper satin: visible creasing, rippling and localized discoloration or darker surface variation, more noticeable around the upper left shoulder and the left side of the satin back, with further tonal variation near panel seams and embroidered areas.
- Pearl-white panels: contrast retained; light creasing, surface variation and subtle age-related discoloration may be present.
- Localized puckering around the dense bird, blossom, lettering and landscape embroidery, common where heavy threadwork sits on lightweight satin.
- Ribbing: present and cohesive, with age toning in the cream sections and gentle waviness, stretching or relaxation; no major missing section. The metal zipper, pull and lower fastening components are present with normal vintage handling character and may run with a different smoothness from modern hardware.
- No extensive tear, major open seam or widespread embroidery loss is visible in the photographs. Color reads differently with light and screen: the velvet black, navy-black or deep midnight blue; the satin copper, bronze, rose-gold, champagne or muted orange.
Fit Guidance
No size label or flat measurements are shown, so compare the jacket with a bomber or sukajan that already fits, measured flat without stretching the ribbing: pit-to-pit chest width, back length from the base of the collar to the hem, sleeve length from the collar seam along the upper sleeve to the cuff (the angled shoulder has no conventional seam), relaxed hem width and cuff width. Japanese vintage sizes are not direct equivalents of Western sizes, and a compact body with relatively full sleeves is typical of sukajan.
Wearing Notes
The velvet face suits selvedge denim, a plain white tee, engineer boots and a leather belt, cuffed denim with a bowling or open-collar rayon shirt for rockabilly, or wide black trousers and restrained monochrome layers; the copper face works with cream, brown, burgundy, navy or faded blue, letting the bird embroidery lead. Velvet deepens shadow and satin catches highlights, which gives the jacket two treatments for stage and editorial photography.
Specialist dry cleaning is recommended; do not machine wash, soak, bleach, wring or tumble dry. Never iron the velvet directly or press over satin embroidery, do not pull or trim loose fibers, and keep the threadwork away from bags, jewelry and hook-and-loop fasteners. Do not hang or carry the jacket by the ribbing, align the zipper carefully before fastening, and store on a broad padded hanger in a breathable cover, away from sunlight, humidity, smoke and perfume; alternate the displayed face to limit uneven light exposure.
