Takashi Murakami × BOME KO2 1/5 Scale Resin Garage Kit by Kaiyodo, Unassembled Complete Set

Before the Louis Vuitton years, Takashi Murakami's art was bound up with garage kits and otaku craft, and KO2 is the emblem of that moment. Sculpted by BOME and produced by Kaiyodo at 1/5 scale, this resin kit is unused and complete, down to its printed blueprint T-shirt, poster and original box.

The Piece

This 1/5 scale KO2 kit comes from the formative years of the Superflat movement and represents one of the earliest meetings between Murakami's postmodern art philosophy and Japan's otaku sculpting culture. It was co-created with the celebrated bishoujo sculptor BOME, among the most influential figure sculptors of the 1990s and 2000s, and manufactured by Kaiyodo, Japan's most respected garage-kit studio.

KO2 herself is an iconic early Superflat figure, embodying Murakami's exploration of exaggerated bishoujo aesthetics, hyper-flattened surfaces and the consumerist fantasy culture that would become central to his later work. The piece predates the global Murakami × Louis Vuitton boom, coming from the period when his art was still intertwined with garage kits and experimental sculptural forms.

A garage kit is a set of cast resin parts for the collector to assemble and paint. This one was never a mass factory run, and complete examples have grown scarce more than two decades after release. It may be kept unassembled as a historical document or professionally built for exhibition, and it speaks equally to Murakami, Kaiyodo and BOME collectors as a meeting point of fine art, sculpture and otaku culture.
