Introduction

One of Takashi Murakami’s most immediately recognizable sculptural characters, Mr. DOB appears here in the vivid Red/Blue edition produced for ComplexCon in 2016.

The work transforms Murakami’s recurring character into a compact three-dimensional object built around exaggerated ears, sharp teeth, concentric rainbow eyes, saturated primary color and the deliberately unstable expression that has made Mr. DOB such an enduring figure within the artist’s visual universe.

This edition was produced in painted cast vinyl and released in an edition of 750, with examples known to bear the artist, collaborator and fabricator markings on the underside..

Mr. DOB

Mr. DOB occupies a central place in Murakami’s iconography.

The character combines the visual vocabulary of Japanese manga and anime with advertising, mascot culture and the exaggerated accessibility of commercial character design.

What initially appears playful quickly becomes stranger on closer inspection.

The rounded ears and cartoon proportions are interrupted by a wide mouth filled with pointed teeth, asymmetric eye treatment and hypnotic concentric graphics.

That tension between attraction and unease is fundamental to the character.

Sculptural Form

The sculpture is built around a spherical central head with projecting circular ears and smaller satellite forms.

Its geometry gives the work unusually strong presence from multiple viewpoints.

From the front, the composition reads almost like a graphic logo.

From the side and rear, the dimensional modeling becomes more apparent, especially through the protruding ears, rounded skull and smooth transitions between individual forms.

The compact scale also makes it particularly suitable for shelf, pedestal, cabinet or desk display.

Color & Surface

The palette is unmistakably Murakami.

Rainbow concentric detailing

The glossy painted surface intensifies the color and gives the sculpture a polished manufactured finish.

This is important to the conceptual character of the work. Murakami frequently collapses the separation between fine art, merchandise and popular visual culture, and the industrial smoothness of the vinyl is part of that language rather than simply a production choice.

Eyes & Facial Expression

The face is where the work becomes particularly magnetic.

One eye uses bright rainbow concentric circles, producing an almost optical-art effect.

Other eye elements use cartoon pupils, curved graphic outlines and deliberately mismatched imagery.

Below them, the sharply toothed mouth cuts across the otherwise rounded silhouette.

The expression is simultaneously cheerful, manic and slightly threatening, one of the central contradictions that makes Mr. DOB instantly identifiable.

Display vitrines

Its relatively compact footprint gives it far more flexibility than large-format sculpture while retaining a powerful visual identity.

Artist & Cultural Context

Takashi Murakami is internationally known for collapsing boundaries between contemporary art, Japanese popular culture, luxury fashion, animation, merchandising and mass production.

Mr. DOB became one of the artist’s foundational recurring characters and has appeared across paintings, prints, sculpture and commercial objects.

The character's deliberately elastic identity allows Murakami to move between innocence, parody, consumerism and visual excess without abandoning the same recognizable core form.

This 2016 sculpture captures that logic particularly well.

It is immediately approachable as a brightly colored collectible object, yet its distorted face, sharp teeth and layered references make it considerably stranger than ordinary character merchandise.

A Note on Collaboration, Superflat & Cultural Shift

The Louis Vuitton × Takashi Murakami collaboration represents a defining moment in early 21st-century visual culture—where luxury fashion and contemporary art dissolved their boundaries.

Murakami’s Superflat philosophy reimagined the Louis Vuitton monogram through vibrant color, character motifs, and graphic expansion—transforming a heritage luxury code into a globally recognized cultural symbol. Pieces from this era are not merely accessories; they are art objects embedded within fashion systems.

At Japonista, these works are approached as hybrid cultural artifacts. They carry the precision of luxury craftsmanship alongside the conceptual framework of contemporary Japanese art.

Surface aging, patina, and signs of use are evaluated with care—preserving authenticity while respecting the integrity of both material and print.

Our role is to steward these pieces as part of a larger narrative: one that reshaped how art, commerce, and identity intersect.

Inquiries, Availability, and Private Consideration

Many Louis Vuitton × Takashi Murakami works are no longer in production and have entered the secondary market as highly sought-after collectibles. Certain pieces are held firmly due to rarity, condition, or specific print variations.

All inquiries are handled with discretion. We welcome thoughtful discussion regarding production era, print type, condition grading, and long-term collectibility.

Collectors building focused archives—whether centered on Murakami’s collaboration period, monogram variations, or specific silhouettes—may consult with us for deeper guidance.

A Closing Note

The Louis Vuitton × Takashi Murakami collaboration stands as a landmark moment—where heritage luxury met contemporary art, and a monogram became a canvas.

These pieces are not simply fashion items; they are records of a cultural shift—objects that captured a time when boundaries between disciplines dissolved into something entirely new.

At Japonista, we steward these works with clarity and intention, ensuring they continue their journey with collectors who recognize both their craftsmanship and their cultural significance.
