Takashi Murakami DOB-kun MoMA Design Store Exclusive Figure, Blue, INSTINCTOY, 2019, Approx. 400 Made, Sealed

DOB-kun, the character at the root of Takashi Murakami's universe, appears here in the blue MoMA Design Store exclusive produced with INSTINCTOY in 2019. This example remains new and sealed in its original co-branded box, an institution-linked release made in a limited run of about 400 per colorway.

The Piece

Before the flowers and before the collaborations, there was DOB. The character embodies Murakami's exploration of identity, repetition and mutation within visual culture, and remains the genesis symbol of his entire system.

Distributed through the Museum of Modern Art's design platform, the figure sits between collectible object and institutional design artifact. The museum channel reframes it: objects offered through MoMA are presented not as toys but as cultural design pieces, moving DOB from subculture collectible toward the design canon.

The blue colorway is the standard DOB configuration, a clean, readable presentation of the character without experimental distortion. Precision molded with a lacquered high-gloss finish, the figure reflects Murakami's interest in perfected, almost artificial surfaces, removing texture in favor of controlled reflection and carrying the Superflat philosophy into three dimensions.
