Takashi Murakami DOB 2020 Blue Silkscreen Print, Edition of 100, Sealed in Original Studio Packaging

DOB, Murakami's earliest and most personal mascot, appears here in one of his cleanest, most graphically resolved forms, set in a luminous, saturated blue field. Released in 2020 in an edition of 100, this example remains sealed in its original studio packaging and has never been removed.

The Piece

DOB 2020 Blue captures the artist's iconic character in a luminous blue field, part of Murakami's enduring exploration of Japanese pop culture, otaku aesthetics and high-art reinterpretation. The image layers whimsy with precision: bright green eyes, a crisp red bow tie and the unmistakable DOB ears anchored against an intricate patterned backdrop, the blue palette bold yet refined and the composition as clear as a museum print.

DOB appears across multiple eras of Murakami's career, evolving stylistically while remaining the nucleus of his creative universe, and collectors recognize the significance of any DOB edition. The blue palette harmonizes across many interiors while remaining a statement, suited to a contemporary room, a fine-art portfolio or a considered gift.

Takashi Murakami (b. 1962), trained at Tokyo University of the Arts, founded the Superflat movement, fusing nihonga aesthetics with postwar anime, manga and commercial iconography; his work is held by museums including MoMA, the Broad and the Mori Art Museum.
