Two of Murakami's most recognizable systems meet in one image: a panda seated atop a densely built sphere of smiling flowers. The character gains spatial authority while the sphere becomes a contained universe. Hand-signed and numbered from an edition of 100, this is a clean example with sharp definition.
The Piece
The silkscreen depicts a panda figure seated atop a sphere composed of tightly packed smiling flower motifs. In many Murakami works the character exists within a field; here the hierarchy is reversed and the panda sits above it, elevated on a constructed base of flowers. The eye moves first to the face, then down into the sphere, a controlled vertical reading in which the character is the entry point but not the entirety.
The spherical base compresses Murakami's flower system into a single geometric form. Unlike flat floral fields, it implies volume: the flowers curve, overlap and wrap around an invisible structure, creating a sense of contained infinity, a micro-world with the panda as its occupant. The composition merges two systems deliberately, the panda carrying character, individuality and narrative potential, the sphere carrying repetition and immersion, so the work does not resolve in a single glance.
Silkscreen is critical here. The density of the sphere demands clean color separation and saturation control; each flower keeps its clarity and each color holds its boundary, so the mass reads as both dense and legible, while the panda's bold, simplified geometry anchors the complexity below. The print speaks to panda-series, flower-system and hybrid-composition collectors alike, a structurally complete composition at this scale and edition level, memorable because it is internally resolved.
