Skull and tora tiger meet American hot rod culture on this embroidered Japanese sukajan, its “The Taste of Freedom” muscle car theme drawn from the rockabilly and custom-car world that Japanese street fashion absorbed and made its own.

The Piece

This embroidered souvenir jacket joins two of the sukajan's most expressive vocabularies: the skull and the tora, or tiger, and the Americana of hot rods and muscle-car racing, here carried under the line “The Taste of Freedom.” The jacket speaks to rockabilly, punk and hot rod culture, the scenes through which the souvenir jacket travelled from postwar Yokosuka into Japanese street fashion.

The sukajan began as an embroidered satin souvenir jacket made in Japan for foreign servicemen after the Second World War, pairing American bomber silhouettes with Japanese embroidery, and later became a fixture of Japanese youth, biker and rockabilly style.
