A Far East Cruise souvenir jacket by Tailor Toyo, naming the USS Lexington and a run of Pacific ports from Yokosuka and Okinawa to Hong Kong and Formosa. Torii shrine, warship and flowers make it a wearable log of a sailor's passage through Asia.

The Piece

Far East Cruise jackets were made for American sailors as embroidered records of service, recording ship and ports of call, and Tailor Toyo, the house most closely tied to the Yokosuka souvenir-jacket tradition, is among their foremost makers. This vintage example names the USS Lexington and a cruise through Japan, Yokosuka, Okinawa, the Philippines, Hawaii, Hong Kong and Formosa, the historical name for Taiwan.

Its imagery joins a warship to a Shinto torii shrine and flowers, the meeting of naval service and Japanese landscape that defines the genre, and its design also carries the names Fresno, Poohbah's and Red James.
