The Piece

This embroidered souvenir jacket transforms traditional Japanese symbolism into a dark and powerful wearable artwork, carrying the storytelling language of classic Yokosuka jumpers into the worlds of Japanese folklore, biker culture, rockabilly fashion and underground streetwear. The traditional beauty of sakura and Mount Fuji imagery is blended with darker themes of mortality, transformation and the warrior spirit, among cherry blossoms, flames, waves and moon imagery.

The back embroidery is the centerpiece: a large-scale skeletal dragon-like creature with large skull imagery and a full bone structure extending across the jacket, burning flame accents and a large orange moon against a dark night ground. The skeleton motif carries themes found in Japanese artistic traditions: the impermanence of life (無常, mujō), strength beyond physical existence, the boundary between the living and spiritual worlds, and transformation through adversity. The moon adds a mysterious atmosphere that recalls night scenes in ukiyo-e prints and tattoo art.

The front continues the theme with symmetrical skeleton motifs and flame details on the dark satin body, set off by silver contrast sleeves and rib-knit collar, cuffs and waistband; the split front embroidery suggests two protective spirits facing outward. The design draws on the irezumi tradition, whose vocabulary of dragons, skulls, flames, flowers, waves and mythical creatures dwells on the contrast between beauty and darkness.
