The Piece

This Yokosuka jumper (スカジャン) takes as its subject the geisha (芸者), the oiran (花魁) and the maiko (舞子), dressed in kimono and set among sakura (桜) and flowers, in the spirit of the “sakuran” image of cherry blossoms in riotous bloom. The figures are drawn in the anime moe style.

Geisha are professional entertainers trained in music, dance and conversation, and maiko are their apprentices; the oiran were the highest-ranking courtesans of the Edo-period pleasure quarters, famed for elaborate hairstyles and layered kimono. Their images have long been among the favored subjects of souvenir jackets, alongside cherry blossom, and here they meet the visual language of modern anime.
