Reversible Oiran Portrait Sukajan, Teal Satin with Moon & Cherry Blossom Bronze Reverse, Size S

An embroidered oiran-style courtesan presides over the teal face of this reversible vintage sukajan, while the bronze-brown reverse opens onto cascading cherry blossoms beneath a pale moon. Two complete pictures share one garment: theatrical portraiture on one side, a spring-night landscape on the other.

The Piece

The first face pairs a teal-blue satin body with ivory sleeves. Across the back, a large embroidered portrait of an elaborately dressed woman, likely representing an oiran-style courtesan, is worked in ivory, black, coral red and metallic-toned thread: a sculptural coiffure with ornate hairpins and floral details, a layered kimono and a round fan. Matching smaller portraits sit on both sides of the chest. The ivory sleeves carry teal racing stripes and fine contrasting piping, teal, ivory and blue striped rib-knit finishes the collar, cuffs and waistband, and angled front pockets flank the full zipper. The restrained palette lends the portrait an almost antique-print quality, while the dense embroidery builds texture against the lustrous satin.

Turned inside out, the jacket becomes a quieter bronze-brown composition. Pink, ivory and red blossoms cascade along embroidered branches that sweep diagonally across the garment, with a pale moon set behind the upper canopy; ivory sleeves meet bronze shoulder panels, the rib-knit is striped brown and ivory, and functional pockets serve this side too. The asymmetrical placement of the flowering branches gives it a graceful, painterly rhythm rather than the rigid symmetry common to souvenir jackets.
