The Piece

The motifs named for this reversible jacket gather many of the touchstones of Japanese imagery in one garment: kingyo goldfish, the tora tiger and the ryū dragon, sakura cherry blossoms, the nami wave associated with Katsushika Hokusai, and the figures of maiko, oiran and geisha. The sukajan, born in postwar Yokosuka as an embroidered souvenir of Japan, has always worked as this kind of visual itinerary, and this reversible example continues that tradition.
