The Niō, the paired guardian kings who flank the gates of Japanese Buddhist temples, are among the most forceful figures in the country's sacred art. This embroidered souvenir jacket takes Agyō, the open-mouthed guardian, as its subject, framed by gold kamon crests and Japanese script.
The Piece
A classic sukajan embroidered with Buddhist and Zen imagery: the Niō deva Agyō, gold kamon family crests and Japanese script, sized L.
Temple gates traditionally pair Agyō, mouth open on the sound "a", with Ungyō, mouth closed on "un": together the first and last sounds, a symbol of beginning and end. Their muscular, glaring forms have made them enduring subjects in tattoo art and souvenir-jacket embroidery.
