The Piece
Offered here is a reversible sukajan by Tedman, the label of EFU Shokai, in a pop yellow colorway. Its embroidery depicts an oiran, the high-ranking courtesan of the Edo pleasure quarters, dressed in kimono and rendered in a tattoo-art idiom that draws on ukiyo-e imagery.
The sukajan, or Yokosuka jumper, began as a souvenir jacket embroidered for American servicemen stationed in Japan after the Second World War and has since become a defining garment of Japanese vintage and amekaji style. Tedman’s pieces carry that tradition forward with an irreverent, tattoo-inflected graphic sensibility.
