Neon Genesis Evangelion Reversible Sukajan, EVA Units 00, 01 & 02 with NERV Crest and White Dragon Embroidery

A reversible sukajan that rebuilds the world of Neon Genesis Evangelion in thread. The armor of Units 00, 01 and 02 rises from coiling white dragons on charcoal satin, while the silver-gray reverse carries a monumental cross and a red, restrained figure: two complete exteriors, two moods, one embroidered meditation on machine and organism.

The Piece

A visually elaborate reversible sukajan inspired by Neon Genesis Evangelion, translating the series’ biomechanical armor, NERV symbolism, apocalyptic religious imagery and experimental weapon language into the traditional format of the Japanese embroidered souvenir jacket. This is not a jacket with a decorative lining: both faces were designed as complete wearable exteriors, with separate palettes, embroidery programs, trim colors, pocket arrangements and emotional identities. The black-and-white side is graphic and character-centered; the silver-and-red side is industrial, ritualistic and almost architectural. Rather than placing a small logo on a bomber, the jacket reconstructs the franchise through dragons, armor fragments, swords, cross forms, flames and calligraphic lettering, a hybrid of anime merchandise and souvenir-jacket storytelling that sits where anime collecting, mecha design, sukajan culture, Y2K fashion and embroidered textile art meet.

The charcoal-black face, with pearl-white satin sleeves, carries the most densely layered embroidery. At the center, armor and helmet forms associated with Evangelion Units 00, 01 and 02 overlap in a stacked arrangement worked in red, yellow, purple, white, green and gray thread: Unit-00 is suggested through yellow and white components, Unit-01 through purple, green, black and yellow armor, Unit-02 through red, white and yellow elements. The units are not shown as full standing figures; their heads and armor emerge from a mass of serpentine creatures, weapon shapes, red energy lines and white threadwork, with the feeling of a combined weapons system, experimental archive or ceremonial emblem. Above, the lettering reads “Prototype-00” in golden-yellow script, “Test Type-01” in lavender and “Production Model-02” in red, a developmental sequence from prototype to test type to production model that turns technical classification into decorative architecture. Large white dragons, with scaled bodies, clawed limbs, open mouths, whiskers and cloud-like contours, coil around the armor and fill the negative space. A long vertical form, reading as sword, spear, restraint device or ritual weapon, descends through the lower center and gives the design a heraldic, crest-like axis; thin red lines run through dragons and figures like energy, blood vessels, exposed nerves or synchronization pathways; and sweeping lavender script across the lower back reads “Red Blood Weapon”, the phrase that closes the composition.

The front of this face is asymmetrical by design. One chest carries a red-and-gray insignia incorporating the letters “NERV” or a closely related emblematic treatment, resembling a military crest with angular armor-like forms and crossed weapon components beneath the lettering, so the front reads as a uniform or organizational jacket rather than ordinary character merchandise. The opposite chest carries a pale dragon in white and gray thread wrapped around a long red weapon-like form, echoing the dragons and technology of the back. Black satin stripes travel along the white sleeves with fine red and white accents, a circular orange-and-white embroidered emblem near one shoulder resembles an experimental unit marking or mechanical seal, and the collar, cuffs and waistband are black knit with strong white striping.

Reversed, the atmosphere changes completely. Silver-gray satin covers the body and sleeves, deep crimson satin panels run from the shoulders down the outer arms, and the ribbing turns charcoal gray with a central red stripe. A large outlined cross dominates the back, its arms extending across the shoulder blades and its long vertical descending toward the waistband; it is built mainly through red stitched outlines and satin panel divisions, so it appears embedded in the garment rather than applied. Across it lies a red humanlike figure with a smooth mask-like head and pale eyes, arms stretched along the horizontal bar and lower body dissolving into twisting root-like or flame-like strands that read as muscle, nerves or organic cables. The figure appears consistent with a stylized Lilith-inspired or cruciform restrained-being motif, recalling the deepest levels of NERV’s facilities, and remains interpretive rather than a literal screen reproduction. More linear white dragons, partly concealed by the cross geometry, circle behind and within it; red flames rise around the cross, shoulders and lower back; and rectangular red outlines above the figure suggest a chamber, restraint platform or laboratory gantry. The front of this face is comparatively minimal, open reflective satin with subdued welt pockets, reserving the drama for the back.

Cross imagery runs through Evangelion’s visual system, in explosions, restraint structures, laboratory architecture and references to sacrifice, creation, death and rebirth; here it functions less as a devotional emblem than as part of an experimental and apocalyptic design language. Japanese and East Asian dragons, traditionally associated with water, storms, protection, transformation, wisdom and command over natural forces, become another language for the immense, hard-to-control power of the units, and red and white confront each other across both faces as blood, fire and warning against dragons, bone and supernatural light. The jacket appears consistent with 2000s to early-2010s Japanese anime streetwear and the Y2K-era revival of elaborately embroidered sukajan: reversible construction, satin color blocking, dense franchise imagery, stylized English lettering and the pairing of anime with dragon embroidery all belong to that moment. The sukajan grew from the embroidered souvenir jackets of Yokosuka and other postwar Japanese port communities, where American bomber and varsity construction met Japanese embroidery and carried dragons, tigers, eagles, maps, flowers and place names, before moving into youth fashion, rockabilly, punk, visual kei, anime collaborations and global streetwear.

Condition

• Vintage pre-owned condition with visible creasing, satin rippling, light surface variation and handling or storage character consistent with age and prior use; both faces remain visually strong and the principal embroidery retains substantial color, definition and impact.
• Black face: natural wrinkling, fold lines, pressure variation and changes in sheen; depending on the light the body may read black, brown-black, charcoal or deep violet-gray. Localized puckering is visible around the dense back embroidery, as is common where heavy machine embroidery meets lightweight satin.
• White sleeves: strong contrast retained, with natural creasing and light surface variation; minor age-related tonal change may be present near seams, folds and high-contact areas. No large dark stain or severe widespread discoloration is visible in the photographs.
• Black-face embroidery: the upper lettering, armor, dragons, red energy lines, central weapon and lower script remain clearly legible, with no major missing section; minor raised fibers, thread irregularity, light edge wear or isolated loose threads may be present.
• Silver-gray face: pronounced directional sheen, creasing, rippling and mottled reflective variation, characteristic of satin; it may read silver, graphite, pewter or pale gunmetal. The crimson panels remain vivid, and the cross, figure, dragons, flames and linework remain substantially intact, with no catastrophic embroidery loss visible.
• Both rib systems appear intact and keep their stripe definition; gentle waviness, relaxation or light pilling may be present, with no major missing rib section or extensive unraveling visible.
• The central metal zipper and lower hardware are present; vintage reversible zipper hardware may not run with the effortless feel of a new zipper and should be aligned carefully before fastening.
• Body panels, sleeves, shoulder inserts, cuffs, waistband, embroidery fields and pocket openings appear structurally present, with no large holes, severe tearing, extensive open seams or missing panels visible. Not presented as factory-new.

Fit and Sizing

No tag size or flat measurements are recorded for this jacket. The recommended measurement points are A, pit-to-pit chest width; B, back length from the base of the collar to the lower waistband; C, sleeve length from the base of the collar along the upper sleeve to the cuff, since the raglan-style construction has no conventional shoulder seam; D, relaxed waistband width; and E, cuff width or another relevant fit point.

Japanese vintage sizing does not correspond consistently with modern Western sizing and varies with era, silhouette, reversible construction, body length, sleeve fullness and ribbing tension, so flat measurements are best compared with a bomber that already fits. The jacket suits masculine, feminine and gender-neutral styling.

Styling, Display, Preservation

The jacket already carries a great deal of visual information and works best with a controlled outfit: black cargo trousers, wide or washed black denim, military trousers, technical sneakers and minimal silver accessories. The black face suits sharper graphic styling; the silver-and-red face works with technical, futuristic or chrome Y2K palettes, and both sit comfortably within visual-kei, gothic, punk and industrial wardrobes or on stage and in editorial work, where the charcoal deepens under shadow and the silver throws metallic highlights.

Either face can hang as a large embroidered wall panel on a broad padded hanger; alternate the visible face during long display to limit uneven light exposure. Specialist dry cleaning for embroidered vintage satin is recommended; do not machine wash, soak, bleach, wring or tumble dry, do not iron over the embroidery, and turn the jacket slowly, supporting the sleeves, when reversing it. Store in a breathable cover away from sunlight, humidity, smoke, perfume and prolonged compression.
