Tailor Toyo KOSHO TT10797 Reversible Sukajan, Iwo Jima and Sasa Tiger, Velveteen and Acetate, 2004, Size F

A 2004 KOSHO Special Edition by Tailor Toyo, model TT10797, recreating an early postwar souvenir jacket with two complete faces: the Iwo Jima flag-raising on navy velveteen and a roaring sasa tiger on quilted acetate. Heavy, genuine patina gives it the presence of a far older archive garment.

The Piece

This Yokosuka jumper by Toyo Enterprise belongs to KOSHO, the premium heritage line of Toyo Enterprise and Tailor Toyo, created to reproduce the materials, construction irregularities, embroidery character, reversible architecture and hand-worked atmosphere of rare 1940s and 1950s souvenir jackets. Model TT10797, released in 2004, pairs an Iwo Jima composition with the celebrated sasa-tora, or tiger-and-bamboo, reverse, and brings together the two forces that define the sukajan: one face preserves the memory of a specific Pacific War location through American military souvenir imagery, the other expresses Japan through tiger, bamboo, moon, bold color and theatrical embroidery. It is a genuine pre-owned collector garment with substantial age-related patina, not a pristine modern bomber.

The principal face is dark navy cotton velveteen whose pile shifts between midnight blue, blue-black, violet navy and charcoal with the direction of the nap. Large gold letters spell “IWOJIMA” in one continuous broad arc beneath the collar, the historic English-language spelling associated with the island and the wartime image. Below, United States Marines raise the American flag on Mount Suribachi: the figures lean together around a diagonal pole in a triangular movement from lower right to the flag at upper left, worked in tan, brown, cream, olive and muted green with restrained blocks of thread rather than fine facial detail, so the group reads as one collective action. The flag, in faded red, pale cream and blue, folds away from the pole in an irregular shape that suggests wind, and the volcanic ground is abstracted into sharp ridges and overlapping bands of blue, pale gray, turquoise, black and gold, suggesting rock, surf and shadow. The face is restrained, its embroidery confined to the central back.

The Battle of Iwo Jima was one of the most devastating confrontations of the Pacific War, with immense loss for both American and Japanese forces. Here the flag-raising, based on the internationally recognized photograph, functions as historic service imagery and as a record of the personalized military subjects ordered for postwar souvenir jackets: material culture of remembrance, American service identity and Japan's complex postwar relationship with the souvenir-jacket trade, rather than decorative combat imagery.

The reverse is steel-blue satin-finish acetate with broad pale-gold sleeves, diamond-quilted across the torso so that a geometric framework shows beneath the tiger wherever the blue ground is exposed. A large tiger stands on rocky ground, head thrown up in a roar, mouth open, fangs bared, tongue extended and whiskers radiating, its body built in yellow, gold, orange, brown, black, cream, white and gray with stripes curving around torso and raised tail; one foreleg is lifted as it advances through the bamboo toward a pale crescent moon at upper left. Dense sasa leaves in several greens, pale blue-green, white and shadow tones surround it, rock in brown, tan, black, white and pale blue lifts it above the waistband, and “Japan” flows across the upper back in red script outlined in bright yellow, in deliberate contrast to the formal gold capitals of “IWOJIMA”. On the chest, two roaring tiger heads face inward toward the zipper in a mirrored, heraldic arrangement, worked in yellow, orange, black, white, gray, pink and red with fine pale cheek stitches and almost mask-like expressions, above diagonal welt pockets trimmed in pale gold.

Construction is fully reversible, with no ordinary hidden lining: cotton velveteen on one face, quilted satin-finish acetate on the other, embroidery in lustrous thread consistent with traditional rayon sukajan work, a central metal zipper configured for reversible use, raglan-style sleeves that leave the broad backs uninterrupted, welt pockets on both faces and striped wool ribbing at collar, cuffs and waistband, aged cream with blue stripes on the velveteen side and cream, navy and burgundy on the quilted side. The embroidery deliberately avoids computerized perfection, with variations in stitch direction, density, tension and outline. Neither side is a lining; this double A-side quality, the scarce Iwo Jima and sasa-tiger pairing, the specific TT10797 identity and KOSHO construction distinguish it from generic Iwo Jima or tiger sukajan, and as a 2004 garment it has acquired its own period identity within early-2000s Japanese heritage fashion, while its design language reaches back to the early 1950s.

Condition

• Heavily charactered vintage pre-owned condition with substantial visible wear, age toning, creasing, rib deterioration, textile variation and signs of extended use or storage; visually powerful and collectible, but not pristine, lightly worn or near-new, and its patina is part of its present identity.
• Velveteen: widespread pile movement, pressure variation, surface haze, light fibers and areas where the nap appears flattened or brushed in different directions, so the face shifts between dark navy, blue-black, violet and lighter blue; sleeves and central back keep their velveteen character with clear evidence of age and handling; fine lint and small pale fibers visible on the dark pile.
• Iwo Jima embroidery: “IWOJIMA” lettering and the flag-raising scene remain substantially complete and legible, with figures, flag, pole, island contours and gold accents keeping their principal shapes; age-related thread wear, softened color, raised fibers and isolated irregularities may be present.
• Quilted acetate: extensive creasing, wrinkling, rippling and uneven reflective sheen; pale-gold sleeves show age toning and surface variation between cream, yellow, champagne, beige and muted gold; the blue body shows pressure lines, quilting-related puckering and lighter and darker areas of sheen, especially across sleeves, shoulders and lower body.
• Sasa tiger embroidery: the large tiger remains vivid and strongly defined, with body, stripes, face, mouth, claws, tail and bamboo retaining substantial color; “Japan” script, moon, rock and foliage clearly legible; minor thread wear, loose fibers, edge lifting or embroidery irregularity may be present.
• Chest tiger heads: both remain bright and striking, with eyes, whiskers, mouths, teeth, tongues and fur divisions clearly readable; natural puckering around the motif edges where the embroidery sits over the quilting.
• Ribbing: the most pronounced wear, with heavy fuzzing, abrasion, loose fibers, fraying, age toning, softened stripe definition, waviness, stretching and localized edge deterioration; the waistband shows particularly noticeable fiber loss and fringe-like wear along parts of the lower edge, the cuffs substantial abrasion and loosened wool fibers, and the collar softened, worn surfaces with fading across the cream, blue and burgundy stripes.
• Zipper: the central metal zipper and lower hardware are present; period-style reversible hardware may feel less smooth and more delicate than a modern zipper and should be aligned gently before use. No claim of factory-new operation is made.
• Seams and panels: all principal body panels, sleeves, embroidery fields and the reversible construction remain present; natural seam waviness, thread movement and tension changes visible; no catastrophic panel loss apparent, though the age of the trim calls for careful wear and storage.
• Colors vary strongly with lighting and pile direction: the dark face may appear navy, blue-black, charcoal or violet-blue, the reverse steel blue, slate, cream, champagne, pale yellow or aged gold.

The KOSHO Name

KOSHO refers to the heritage identity of 港商, Kōshō or KOSHO & CO., the predecessor connected with Toyo Enterprise's early souvenir-jacket production. Toyo Enterprise traces its history to the immediate postwar period, when embroidered jackets combining American bomber construction with Japanese embroidery were made for American service members in Japan, their tigers, dragons, eagles, maps, mountains, military emblems, place names and personalized scenes turning utilitarian outerwear into souvenirs of service and travel; Tailor Toyo later became one of the principal custodians of that tradition.

The KOSHO Special Edition line holds a particularly respected place in Tailor Toyo collecting. Its jackets are close recreations of historic souvenir jackets preserved in the company archive and wider vintage collections, emphasizing period-style fabrics, old-fashioned embroidery character, special rib construction resembling early wool trim, reversible hardware that can feel more primitive and delicate than modern zippers, and intentional irregularities that evoke hand-finished postwar work. The textiles are intended to age visibly, and this example has developed substantial genuine wear on top of that built-in character.

Tiger, Bamboo and Moon

The tiger stands for courage, command, physical strength and decisive action, and in East Asian symbolism may act as a guardian against harmful influence, so that across a jacket's back its roar faces outward like a shield. A solitary animal, it also suggests self-reliance and independence, in tune with the sukajan's later place in youth culture, motorcycle fashion, rockabilly and punk; here it roars and advances while its body stays balanced, strength with direction rather than uncontrolled violence.

Bamboo bends without breaking and so signifies resilience, flexibility and endurance; its rapid growth speaks of vitality, and its hollow, segmented stem of humility, clarity and moral structure. The tiger confronts and the bamboo endures, together a statement of courage supported by flexibility, one reason the sasa-tora has remained so compelling in Japanese visual culture. The crescent moon turns the scene nocturnal, suggests transition, renewal and an ongoing cycle, and balances the bright “Japan” inscription and raised tail in the upper-left space.

Preservation and Display

Professional cleaning by a textile specialist experienced with vintage velveteen, acetate, rayon embroidery, wool ribbing and reversible garments is strongly recommended; do not machine wash, hand soak, bleach, wring, scrub or tumble dry. Do not iron the velveteen or press a hot iron to the acetate, avoid home stain removal, and brush the pile only gently with tools suited to delicate velvet. Do not pull or trim loose threads, and keep the embroidery away from rough bags, jewelry, hook-and-loop fasteners and abrasive surfaces.

The wool ribbing is visibly fragile: never pull the jacket on or off by the cuffs, waistband or collar, never hang it from the ribbing, align the zipper carefully without forcing the slider, and reverse the jacket slowly with the sleeves and body supported. Store on a broad padded hanger or flat in an acid-free textile box with breathable protection, away from sunlight, humidity, smoke, perfume, dust, pests and compression. Either back can be displayed as a large embroidered textile panel, the Iwo Jima side subdued and museum-like, the tiger side vivid; alternating the displayed face under controlled, indirect light limits exposure on any single surface. The jacket is folded for transit with protective material between the faces, pile, ribbing and hardware, and any gentle transit folds should be left to relax naturally rather than treated with heat.
