Tailor Toyo USMC 3rd Marine Division Camp Courtney Reversible Sukajan, Black Velveteen & Quilted Satin

Two faces, two records of American military life on Okinawa. Black velveteen carries the U.S.M.C. 3rd Marine Division crest between guardian dragons, while a quilted mauve reverse shows a seated tiger roaring beneath the words Japan and Camp Courtney. This discontinued Tailor Toyo model treats the whole garment, chest to cuff, as one embroidered canvas.

The Piece

This vintage-era Tailor Toyo reversible sukajan unites U.S. Marine Corps imagery, Okinawa military history and the classic Japanese dragon-and-tiger pairing across two radically different faces. It speaks three visual languages at once: American military heraldry, Japanese mythological embroidery and the base and tour-jacket culture of Okinawa. One face is dark, commanding and ceremonial, with the formal presence of a regimental presentation jacket; the other is weathered, nostalgic and unmistakably Okinawan.

The principal face is cut in deep black velveteen with a soft, light-absorbing pile, finished with muted mustard-yellow knit at the collar, cuffs and waistband, a warm, deliberately aged yellow that answers the ochre and amber of the crest. Across the upper back, widely spaced letters spell U.S.M.C. Beneath them sits a large shield-like crest in amber, yellow, cream, dark brown and muted blue, enclosing an Eagle, Globe and Anchor-style insignia (the bird spreading its wings above a globe-like center, an anchor passing through the lower composition), central star-like geometry, castle or engineering emblems, military equipment imagery, a small lower figure, decorative banners and unit-style lettering. Fidelity runs across the upper arc, Honor along the left side and Valor along the right; a lower banner appears to read “3rd Eng,” preserving the engineering or unit character of the original design.

Two long dragons rise vertically on either side of the shield, their serpentine bodies worked in warm yellow and amber with individually articulated scales, claws, whiskers and horned heads. Rather than circling the crest they stand like ceremonial guardians, readable as protection, vigilance, authority, resilience, control over water and weather, and passage between cultures. The three words of the crest are closely associated with the motto language of the 3d Marine Division, which official Marine Corps histories describe through honor, valor and fidelity; the division was activated in 1942 and has served in major campaigns from the Second World War onward. Here they act both as military identifiers and as a statement of loyalty, courage and duty, so the American and Japanese elements are deliberately intertwined rather than kept apart.

The sleeves are among the jacket’s most distinctive features. Large dragons in cream, pale gray and muted yellow travel down both arms through curling clouds, heads near the lower forearms and bodies spiraling upward, with long scaled bodies, horned heads, open mouths, claws, whiskers, curved tails and contrasting facial features; against the black velveteen they appear almost illuminated. The cloud work begins high on the shoulders, so the design reads from the front and the side as well as from behind. On the chest, one side carries a smaller shield with the same Fidelity, Honor and Valor wording, a three-pointed central device and a ribbon reading “3rd Marine Division,” worked in amber, cream, brown and muted lavender; the other carries a larger amber Eagle, Globe and Anchor-style emblem in dense monochrome threadwork. Two dark welt pockets sit quietly at the lower front.

Reversed, the jacket changes from severe black heraldry to a softer quilted palette of dusty mauve, pale yellow and warm champagne, centered on a roaring tiger above a mountain landscape and the embroidered destination name Camp Courtney. Many sukajan concentrate their embroidery on the back alone; this example carries imagery across the chest, shoulders, sleeves and both back panels, capturing the hybrid identity of the souvenir jacket in unusually complete form.

Condition

• Pre-owned vintage condition with natural wear and patina: previously owned, worn and stored, and not presented as deadstock, unused or pristine. The major embroidery remains strong and highly readable.
• Black velveteen: general surface wear, light lint and fibers, minor pile flattening and tonal variation, natural velveteen pressure marks, and light rubbing around seams and edges. Depending on pile direction and light, some areas read charcoal, blue-black or slightly lighter where the velvet was pressed during wear or storage.
• Ribbing: discoloration and age toning, natural softness and surface wear, with softening of the mustard-yellow cuffs and waistband.
• Quilted reverse: general satin wrinkling, storage creases, quilting compression, uneven tonal variation on the mauve body and age-related variation on the pale yellow sleeves; natural creasing and pressure lines remain visible.
• Minor surface spots or marks, light embroidery fuzziness, possible small loose threads, stitching irregularities associated with dense embroidery, natural puckering around embroidered areas and general signs of previous use.
• The U.S.M.C. lettering, Fidelity, Honor and Valor shield, 3rd Marine Division chest patch, Eagle, Globe and Anchor imagery, long sleeve dragons, cloud embroidery, Japan and Camp Courtney lettering, roaring tiger and mountain landscape all retain excellent visual presence.
• No major tear is visible in the photographs. Small imperfections that do not photograph clearly may be present given the garment’s age; the ribbing, sleeve surfaces, quilted reverse and areas around the embroidery deserve particular attention in the images.

Quilted Tiger Reverse

Turned inside out, the jacket becomes a diamond-quilted satin-type garment with visible padding, warmer and more substantial in feel. The body is a muted mauve, dusty lavender or faded rose-brown; the quilted sleeves read pale yellow, champagne yellow, warm cream, muted butter or light ochre under shadow, never metallic gold. Each stitched diamond catches light differently, shifting from pale lavender to dusky brown and faded pink, and the colors carry an almost archival quality against the black velveteen of the other face.

The back centers on a tiger in yellow, black, cream and warm brown thread, seated in profile with head raised and mouth open, beneath the word Japan and above Camp Courtney, both embroidered in capitals. Unlike the charging tigers of many sukajan, this one sits, a more contemplative pose that keeps the animal’s authority. Around it rise blue mountain forms, pale rocky ridges, green bamboo or foliage, pink cloud or blossom-like accents and flowing ground lines.

The quilted front repeats the military imagery in the softer palette: the Fidelity, Honor and Valor shield above a ribbon reading “3rd Marine Division” on one chest, a simplified amber Marine Corps-style emblem on the other, diamond stitching across both chest panels and sleeves, and two narrow welt pockets trimmed in pale yellow. Quieter than the tiger back, this face is relatively easy to wear.

The tiger, long associated with courage, protection and physical power, balances the dragons of the black face: dragons for motion, air, water and the celestial realm, the tiger for strength, earth and territorial presence, following the East Asian tradition of complementary powers. Its striped body let embroiderers build depth through contrasting thread directions.

Historical Context

Camp Courtney, in Uruma City, Okinawa, has long been associated with the headquarters of the 3d Marine Division; official division history records the division’s move there after leaving Vietnam in 1969. The black face presents the division’s identity through insignia and motto, the quilted face names the place, and together they read as a wearable memory of an overseas posting rather than a generic fashion graphic.

Sukajan grew out of souvenir garments made in postwar Japan for American military personnel, embroidered with dragons, tigers, eagles, maps, unit names and the places where the wearer was stationed. The predecessor of Toyo Enterprise supplied souvenir jackets and related garments to U.S. military post exchanges in that original period, and Tailor Toyo continues the heritage through reproductions and reinterpretations based on surviving vintage examples.

This example is a discontinued vintage-era Tailor Toyo reproduction or reinterpretation; its materials, reversible construction, embroidery style and exact USMC Camp Courtney configuration are consistent with earlier modern Tailor Toyo production. Matching Tailor Toyo USMC Camp Courtney jackets known in Japan are most commonly size L.

Wearing Notes

Japanese sukajan frequently fit shorter in the body and more compactly through the shoulders than contemporary Western bombers, so flat measurements are a more reliable guide than the letter size; compare them with a similar jacket that already fits comfortably.

The black face sits naturally with raw indigo or black denim, military fatigue or olive cargo trousers, cream workwear, plain white or black tees, engineer or service boots and minimal leather sneakers; its mustard ribbing works particularly well with brown leather, faded khaki and natural denim. The quilted reverse, lighter and more eccentric, wears almost as a separate jacket with cream or washed denim, brown corduroy, faded olive, mauve or burgundy knitwear, suede boots and soft earth tones.

For display, use a broad padded hanger able to support the quilted construction, keep the mauve and pale-yellow reverse out of direct sunlight to limit fading, and avoid compressing the embroidered sleeves beneath heavier garments. Professional specialist cleaning is recommended; avoid bleach, aggressive stain removal, machine drying and direct ironing over embroidery or velveteen.

Authenticity & Care
