Miyabi Musubi Reversible Sukajan, Golden Tiger & Sakura, Rising Koi, Tonal Phoenix and Dragon, Black and Ivory

Tiger, koi, dragon and phoenix, four of the most powerful subjects in Japanese decorative art, share one reversible jacket. The color face is luminous and dimensional, a golden tiger in falling sakura with a rising koi behind; the reverse turns nocturnal, its phoenix and dragon drawn in charcoal tones that surface only as light moves across the satin.

The Piece

A remarkably elaborate reversible sukajan built around tiger, koi, dragon and phoenix, unified by sakura blossoms, turbulent water, clouds and botanical imagery. Rather than repeating one large motif, it behaves like two separate works of wearable art sewn into a single garment: color against monochrome, land against water, tiger against dragon, koi against phoenix, embroidered dimensionality against shadow-like tonal graphics. It moves from flamboyant Japanese streetwear to dark, understated luxury simply by being reversed.

On the color side, a golden tiger descends diagonally across the black satin front, head lowered, shoulders compressed, paws extended, its striped torso bending through the garment while its tail and upper body disappear among blossoms, as though emerging from a painted landscape. Gold and ochre embroidery with fine darker stripes and pale highlights gives the fur volume. The tiger moves through a field of pink sakura and scattered petals that thickens into a flowering canopy above it, while smaller petals drift down the garment. Behind the brighter work lies a quieter tonal layer of black, charcoal and muted gray: flowering branches, bamboo-like foliage, additional petals, curling forms and vegetation that appear almost as shadows on close viewing. The ivory or champagne sleeves are framed by black striping, and black-and-ivory striped ribbing finishes the collar, cuffs and waistband.

The back of this side shifts from terrestrial power to aquatic movement. A large koi, worked in stronger red, coral and pale highlights, climbs vertically through a dark landscape of swirling water, current-like forms, pink blossoms, flowering branches, subtle blue accents and tonal vegetation, like a nocturnal pond or river. The koi's association with persistence comes from the East Asian legend of the carp that swims against powerful currents and becomes a dragon on passing the Dragon Gate; with the koi on one face and the dragon on the other, the jacket carries a progression from perseverance to transformation. The tiger, or tora, carries strength, courage, protection and fierce determination, and in East Asian art is often treated as the earthly counterpart of the dragon, so the two faces stage a conversation between legendary opposing powers.

Reversed, the jacket becomes black satin with charcoal, gray and muted metallic tonal artwork and almost no bright color; the imagery is built from differences of sheen and line, disappearing into the black and reappearing as the light changes. The front carries a massive bird in the hō-ō, or phoenix, tradition, its flowing wings and elongated plumage spanning the torso in dark gray and charcoal linework that recalls sumi ink drawing, antique textile patterning, engraved line art, monochrome tattoo flash and traditional screen imagery. The phoenix stands for renewal, harmony, dignity, transformation and auspicious power, and its pairing with the dragon recalls the great complementary dragon-and-phoenix tradition. Across nearly the entire back sweeps an enormous ryū, its head high and its serpentine body descending through clouds and turbulent waves, built from outline, scales, whiskers, claws, curving body segments, cloud formations and breaking waves; broad arcs of water rise from the hem while smaller cloud and spray motifs fill the negative space.

The color side makes extensive use of raised embroidery: dimensional tiger fur, individually articulated stripes, layered sakura petals, koi scales, flower centers, foliage and curling water. The reverse is quieter and more graphic, using dark linework and large-scale tonal motifs. The piece sits in the wagara tradition of Japanese decorative fashion, which reinterprets imagery from ukiyo-e, tattoo art, folding screens, Buddhist art, folklore, textile design, nihonga, shrine and temple ornament and pattern books. The sukajan itself grew from postwar souvenir jackets made for American servicemen around Yokosuka, where Japanese embroidery met the Western bomber silhouette; this example belongs to the modern sukajan and wagara revival popular from the late 1990s through the 2000s and 2010s, referencing vintage Yokosuka jackets with far denser artwork than most postwar originals.

• The photographs form an important part of the condition record.

Four Creatures

Each creature receives substantial territory rather than a decorative cameo, which makes the jacket far more ambitious than a standard reversible souvenir jacket.

• Tiger: earthly power, courage and ferocity
• Koi: persistence, ascent and transformation
• Dragon: celestial power, movement and supernatural authority
• Phoenix: renewal, elegance and auspicious harmony

Fit and Styling

Because Japanese sukajan sizing can differ substantially from US and European sizing, actual garment measurements should be the primary fit reference; a classic sukajan works best with a slightly compact bomber fit. The tiger side pairs with faded indigo or black denim, vintage straight-leg denim, military trousers, engineer boots or minimalist sneakers; the tonal side with all-black trousers, black boots, charcoal denim, monochrome sneakers and dark Japanese streetwear, and is especially effective at night as the artwork emerges under changing light.
