Mihara Yasuhiro, the designer who made his name reworking the familiar, takes up the Yokosuka souvenir jacket in black, with a map of Japan, birds of prey and a tiger worked in tattoo-art embroidery on a reversible body.

The Piece

Mihara Yasuhiro brings a designer's eye to one of Japan's most recognizable garments. The sukajan began in postwar Yokosuka as an embroidered souvenir for American servicemen, and map-of-Japan backs, eagles and tigers are among its oldest motifs; here they return on a black reversible body, embroidered in a tattoo-art idiom.
